Small Cool 2009: Claudia's Calm & White
Tiny Division #51

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: Claudia + 1
Location: Bronx, New York City
Size: 500 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? I love white — it makes me feel calm. But I enjoy my kitchen. It is tiny and it is the only place that has color. In the kitchen I went the opposite and painted the wall a really strong, bright green. I love it. I love the contrast when you walk into the apartment. All you see is white except that strong green kitchen wall.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? The apartment was horrible when we moved here. Linoleum floor tiles, brown fridge, 60"s kitchen and wallpaper. I did everything myself, over time. I removed tiling, reinstalled new ones. I installed the kitchen cabinets myself, including new sink and countertop. I took out the old bathroom wall and shower tiles, re-tiled, installed new sink, faucet, toilet. I did one thing at a time, on weekends. I love white, and the biggest challenge is finding white furniture when one has limited funds.

You should be really proud of all you have accomplished, Claudia!
I'm very impressed with your DIY skills, as I wish to grow some of my own! How did you learn? Can you recommend any books or sites that helped you along the way?

I love the white (hate the green). I wanted to do our living room in all white but got overruled. Won't happen again. I really like an all white room.

I think it takes real commitment to do an all white room in any part of the house. You have to stay focused....or you end up with other stuff instead. I am facing one of those decisions right now. I hope I can stick to my plan and end up with a space as lovely as yours. I love your design a whole lot.

Forgot to add how much I like the shears. They have a wonderful delicate look to them. I want some.

Love it! It's about the size of our flat (in Hungary) . Do you have a blog journalling the diy works you've done?

This space feels good. I like the overlapping zebra rug and flokati, especially with the cat! What IS that steel item that looks like a washing machine hanging on the wall next to the TV?

One quibble: I think the one strong green kitchen wall is great, but it presently highlights the only area of clutter I see in your place! I think it really needs to be neat and sleek. . . .

I am almost blinded by the white - but it's obvious you had a vision and stuck to it. My favorites are the rugs and the white sofa - lots of seating in a tiny space but it doesn't appear crowded. Must be all that white...

I want a bubble chair so bad! Surprising to find it in such a small space, but it works.

Thanks to everyone who gave us a thumbs up. Just to answer some of the questions:

The Knife holder can be found easy on the internet. Just google Ex-husband knife holder :)
Actually, the Espresso machine came after the kitchen wall was painted.
Yes, the panels slide. I made those and tout of plywood and they used to have Shoshi paper in the. An unfortunate vacuum cleaning accident tore the paper and I got these peg panels cut.
I collect the chrome washing machine insides, used them to house large plants. The cats enjoy them so I decided to convert them for their use.
I found the stackable shelves on the internet but I cannot remember where I found them.

About DIY skills - I just go ahead and do it and hope for the best and I really enjoy doing it. I have HGTV on all the time (hence the Lowe's add on TV - pure coinsidence) and learn from them and by doing some research on the internet as well.

Again, thanks for checking it out and voting.

Excellent use of white, Ikea products and a modest budget. When I first heard about APARTMENT Therapy, this is what I was hoping for.
