Small Cool 2009: Delilah's Color & Pattern
Teeny-tiny Division #14

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: Delilah + ridiculously small dog
Location: Upper East Side, New York City
Size: 250 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? My sofa. I wanted something unique, comfortable and affordable. My friend had recovered this sofa and it was the perfect color and pattern.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? Storage and tying everything together. I carried swatches of paint, fabric and measurements around for months trying to find the right accessories.

I love all the pattern and bright colors in this teeny-tiny space!

The green is a tad bit bright for my taste, but I love that you made it your own and that it definitely pops! The sofa is gorgeous and looks great.

I love the furniture but I think painting one green accent wall and leaving the other walls neutral would have made the other green and orange colors stand out.
Great sofa.

I like everything that's going on, 'cept for the busy pattern in your bathroom. It just seemed a bit overwhelming. Nice!

I really admire how well you've configured your small home, but the photos are seriously making my eyes bleed. I think there's just too much saturated color in such a cramped space, and the effect looks sort of cluttered to me.

Delilah, is it weird having your bed right next to the kitchen? I just put down a depo on a remarkably similar place and since the layout's such that the front door opens RIGHT into the living room, I'm a little bit at a loss about where to stick the bed.

I like the commitment to vivid walls, but it is really extreme-looking in these pictures, given the lighting and size of the rooms. (I wonder what the place looks like in daylight?)

The somewhat traditional furniture, window treatment and accessories--especially in the first picture--don't seem to work with the acid green walls.

Well, that certainly paid off! Love this place. So pulled together and inviting.

Love it-- so individual and stylish! such a relief from the safe beige or white interiors (vaunted for being "uncluttered" but they just look unthoughtful to me). This is such a sophisticated New York look.

I used to have a bedroom painted that color green! I loved it. I had hot pink curtains and other accents. So fun!

Take photos in the daytime, people!

I think this place, and especially the strong colors, would look a lot better with better lighting and no flash photography.

Still, I can look beyond the bad lighting and see that you have a very well curated place here. Great choices.

Yes. The bathroom rocks, but I myself could not handle that amount of green.

Thanks for the positive comments! To answer some questions: the bamboo shelves were very hard to find but I got them online (I was glad to incorporate something eco-friendly). The photos were rushed and taken at night, hence the poor quality – thanks to those who can see beyond that! The wall color is not as bright/overwhelming as it appears in the photos. I made the curtains and the bedskirt from fabric I found on ebay and the shower curtain from fabric that a friend gave to me. I really wanted a colorful, fun space even though it is a small rental. The green is actually relaxing and refreshing and was a decorator friend’s recommendation and chocolate brown and aubergine are great complements to the color. I did all the painting and work myself on a small budget, so keep that in mind...my dog didn't lift a finger to help.

Love love love your couch!! Infact, when u r tired of it, plz sell it to me.
I am not a big fan of the shower curtain fabric, but I think it does work with that shade of green. The green btw is quite awesome. I would feel energized and peppy if I saw that when I woke up in the morning.

I love the bold colour!!
I have a tiny apartment as well, (but I can never get it as tidy as you have here!!) and I painted the bedroom wall bright green, a bit lighter then you have, it took me some getting used to, but now I really love starting every day as a bright day!

What type of fabric is the shower curtain made of? Is it waterproof? I really like it!!

I can imagine the green is richer in person than in the photos and I like her mix of sophisticated furniture with touches of fun. I just think the valance and fabric around the sink are a little much, otherwise, I really like this place. And I can't believe it's 250 sq. ft.

The shower curtain is an upholstery fabric, but I have a regular liner behind it. Also - it isn't so weird having the bed by the kitchen - I went through the same struggle to find a place for the bed. I did not want it near the windows, since that was such a great sitting area, and if it was in the middle of the room, the apartment looked so small. I was hesitant to put it by the kitchen at first, but I think I just got used to it!

I also have a 6' drop leaf table (to the left of the window with a lamp on it) that I can expand to entertain, which is why I have the extra chairs - I may ditch them at some point. It is still a work in progress as I need artwork or maps over my sofa and a rug (I was waiting for my dog to be fully trained before I got one). Thanks again for the thumbs up!

Second picture from the left is my favorite. You have very nice tastes! The vibrant green walls are win. Also, the book / storage space behind the couch is really nice, too. :)

Finally some color!!! It's very challenging to successfully use bright colors on such small spaces, hence all the white apartments submitted. Kudos for doing it!!

This entry actually motivated me to create an account just so I could give you a thumbs up.

Yes, there are things I'd recommend changing (like getting rid of those chairs they don't add to the look, and get a bigger picture or a headboard for the bed). All in all it's still great as it is. Keep up the good work.
