Small Cool 2009: Ekta's Natural Light
Little Division #06

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: Ekta Chopra
Location: Jersey City, New Jersey
Size: 685 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? My dining area! I get natural light all day long. Even though I have a full sized desk, I do pretty much everything on this Docksta dining Table.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? Biggest challenge in a studio is to define functional areas. A lot of trial and error went into setting up this space. I love websites based on home decor. I sit down with AT and my cuppa coffee every morn! I am amazed at how creative people are with their homes! There is inspiration everywhere.

Lovely! It reminds me of my place when I went through my pale-blue-and-white period.

Very nice! I really like the living room, but I think my favorite area is the little desk nook. I'm a sucker for a cool workspace.

I love all the light and space you have. I would think about putting one larger art piece over the couch, instead of all the smaller ones, just to balance out the room better.

Hey! Where did my comment go? Nice space. But I believe the art over the couch is hung too high.

It's quirky little apartments like this that make me long for awkward nooks in my very square-box apartment.

Where's the light over the dining room table from?

Thanks for all the suggestions.
The desk is from West Elm.
The Lamp is from CB2.
The color on the walls (living/dinning) was custom made at Home depot to match a pillow. Actually It's gray color, i guess it picks up hues from the light outside.

Indians love to hang their art work high on the wall sometimes touching the celing. My mom used to have all her pic and art work touching the ceiling so the kids, won't touch them. Art work being mostly pic of Gods. This is a cultural thing.
Ekta you have done a great job, love the serenity in your place. I would change the pic over the sofa to a large piece with lots of punch and color. and may be the small pic in a linear fashion in another area.

Ahaha! My pics seem very high bcoz of the angle the pic was taken. All the pics in the room are at the same height. i do agree with replacing smaller pics with a large one above the couch. Anjana, I plan to make my own art soon and hang it. Thanks for the suggestions again.

I'm sorry... this just looks like an IKEA spread to me... but with less personality. Loosen up a little bit, try garage sales, ebay, craigslist... get some unique furniture in there and a little more color... I love IKEA, don't get me wrong... and you have made nice choices as far as which pieces to use from there. It just needs a little more flavor.

where can i get a body form/ mannequin like yours in the living room? (sorry, I don't even know what's called!)

I like this but I'm not in love. I feel like there's a lot of potential and there's a few cool pieces, Jesse Lu is right, the personality isn't shining through and it'd be great if there was more of that.

very zen, i love the wall color and discipline! put a large painting above your sofa; the small framed pics don't anchor the space enough. just cuz your space is small doesn't mean all your things need to be diminutive. for example, i like how your dining space has that big glossy lamp.

I really love the color you have in the livingroom space. Its exactly what I'm looking for since it's very soothing. I noticed you mentioned you had it custom made. Great idea! Congrats on this stylish home!
