Small Cool 2009: kateheffernan's Giant Windows & Blue Burlap
Small Division #09

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: 2 kateheffernan + Andrew
Location: Brooklyn, New York
Size: 950 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? I really love the giant windows in the living room and the door to the small balcony. We can open the door in the summer and have a breeze that flows through the whole apartment. I also love the open kitchen — I love to cook so it's great to have that integrated into the living area.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? The apartment is on the third floor of a very narrow building and there is a split stairwell that leads up to it. Neither the couch nor the box spring would fit up the stairs so we had to find a new couch that we could move up in pieces. IKEA had a couple of good affordable options for this so that worked out well.

The east-facing window in the bedroom was another issue. It's great during the day but waking up at 4am every day got old really fast. The ceilings are 15 ft high — which is great — but it makes it really tough to find curtains on a budget. I was able to get some pretty blue colored burlap for only $6/yard online and backed them with some blackout lining. Then I got a custom cut metal pipe at the hardware store for $10 to hang them on. I'm really happy with the results.

I hear you on the east-facing bedroom windows. I had those in my last apartment - waking up at 4am in the summer in a pool of sweat is no fun at all.

great space, living room looks lovely

funkier bedside lamps and a colorful pillow would really enhance that comfy bedroom

Sorry, I am not seeing a lot of personalization or differentiation in this dwelling.

Hey, is this the same building as Kimmer's (Small Division #6)? Kim is also in Brooklyn, and your windows and kitchens look exactly the same, down to the cabinets.

Yeah - I actually noticed that they seem to have the same kitchen appliances and a very similar floorplan. I'm not sure if it's the same building. I was trying to figure out how to leave a comment about this on their post without sounding creepy.

matilde... hey it's kimmers... yes there are a load of condo's and buildings that have emerged throughout brooklyn... you have a GREAT eye... That is also why it's so cool to see how we try to evolve and change these spaces.... in an otherwise "cookie cutter" developers group!!! cheers kateheffernan... wonder where you are, let's have a beer... ! kimmers 'old new'

I really like the apartment and the building a lot. Seems like you would get great light and I love that the kitchen opens up to that view.
The stairs are so cool. The kitchen although small is minimal and bright with the mustard walls. Finding cheap curtains is hard, but 15' windows are the best in a small flat!!
The dining table is great. perfect size and shape for that flat. great find? Good luck.

The ceiling height and the windows really work to make a small space grow - great view! The colors and the furniture work to tie it all together.
