Small Cool 2009: Meg's Collections & Memorabilia
Tiny Division #55

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: Meg
Location: Upper East Side, New York City
Size: 350 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? I love that — even in an apartment this small — I have a separate, eat-in kitchen. It helps my living space feel larger, and also makes it a bit easier to throw dinner parties — which I love to do.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? While living in a small space has helped me curb my packrat tendencies (somewhat), I still have a bit of a thing for, well, things. IKEA storage to corral my books, clothes and kitchen paraphernalia helped a ton, but did nothing for the collection of family photos & memorabilia that I received from my grandparents. I love family photos, but hate cluttering up surfaces with them, so I decided to hang them, salon-style, in my bathroom, along with photos I've taken on vacations around the world. I figure it gives guests something to look at, and brightens up my otherwise-beige-as-it-gets rental bathroom!

I love your place! Very colorful and liveable and real. But I have to admit I cringed when I saw you are hanging family photos in the bathroom. Not because I don't think they look great, but because hanging art - especially photographs and works on paper - in the bathroom where humidity changes drastically is really bad for them. Maybe you can scan copies of the originals and hang the copies? I've seen other people hanging work in bathrooms too in these entries and decided not to say anything, but with family photos you obviously cherish - I'd hate for you to find them discolored, stuck to the glass, or ruined by mold.

Would have been great to see the kitchen you mentioned.

I like how you separated the space. My studio is about the same size, maybe a tag smaller but this is also how I separate the room so it wouldn't appear to be one big 'ol room. I also agreed to what "home body" said above about photos in the bathroom.

I love the floor lamp behind the seat. Nicely done.

Love what you've done! Have you taken any special precautions to protect the photos you have in your bathroom from humidity? Just curious.

I Heart this place so much!!
It is absolutely fabulous! I had been wondering if I should pay for the shipping and duties for that scroll tray, but now I definetly am . . . The "bedroom" is luscious!

I really like how you've separated the space with the colourful bookcase..and I think your bathroom has real character with all the photographs..where did you get the candy striped shower curtain from? It's fab!

Wow, this isn't just beautiful, but obnoxiously so! Amazing for an apartment this small. Fortunately, your apartment has a nice floorplan with lots of wall space that allows for that kind of separation. Still, I'm incredibly envious. Thumbs up!

Oh, and glad you're just big enough that you got bumped up to Tiny category and didn't have to compete against me in Teeny-Tiny! :-)

hi, all! meg here!

first, thanks so much for all the compliments! second, for those worried about my photos, rest assured - since i live alone, i rarely close the door to the bathroom, so the room doesn't get too humid. that said, i keep a VERY close eye on the family photos, and will take them out the second i notice any damage. so far, so good.

I really like your space. As others who wrote here - I would be really worried to hang in bathroom photos that would be difficult to replace (I guess the ones from recent travels are less of a problem, but older family pieces might be just in one copy).

Very nicely done. I like the positioning of the book shelf - serving a dual purpose of separating the bed from the living area. Good luck!

I am totally in love with the separate bedroom. The space is laid out really well! Can we see the kitchen?

I LOVE the look of the photos in the bathroom. I have a giant, blank wall in mine, so I'm stealing this! (keeping the humidity message in mind :)

Love that your bookshelves are actually filled with books rather than bric a brac and object d'art. there is something very visually pleasing about your space.

Great space! The kitchen is her fave element, yet she doesn't include a photo. What a tease!

really love your apartment and like it is filled with books and colour cosy sleeping space and what i call real life' but mostly referred to as clutter by so many..i dont always agree with the overwhelming desire for minimalism in small spaces that people seem to feel on this site.where are pictures from above the sofa- love subtle addition of more colour in this way? best of luck but my vote for sure!

Great job making a real living room out of the middle room. I know how hard it is to overcome the hallway effect. The expected thing would be the sofa on the right-hand side of the room, but here (genius!) the sightline and rhythm alternate between the bedroom and the living room. And the scale of furniture is in proportion to the space. Lovely and inspiring.

Would love to see photos of the kitchen!! Does Apartment Therapy limit the number of photos that you can upload?? Since it seems most entries only have 5 pics.... Just wondering.....
btw, great space! Comfy, light, organized and COZY!!! :)

Eek!! My problem with your apartment is this:
If I were to live there, I would be forced to quit my job, cut all ties with family and friends and have my groceries delivered. Nothing would ever get done because I would spend all of my time wrapped in a blanket and lazing about. I have NEVER in my life wanted to nap in so many areas of one person's home.
Really. Your apartment is what I dream of when I am sick. I would sit in that chair, six blankets deep, sipping broth and popping vitamins, with a content smile plastered to my face despite the mucus. Ahhh...

Great idea of putting pictures in a bathroom. The steam sure does the paper good. Also putting a bed into the light while the living room stays in the darkness is very clever too.

@Clap
Wow. You're oh so witty and smart; makes me think you'll win your competition ... oh wait, looks like you didn't enter one. I can't see any pictures of your perfectly-decorated home because you're not someone who can do, you're someone who can criticize. Guess we'll never get to see your dimly lit Hello Kitty bedroom set, ceiling fan and bedside table lamps, all expertly arranged and photographed in the basement of your parents' home.

This is so lovely!

Maybe a good thing for the family photographs is to have them scanned (either by you or professionally) and then burned to a CD for a safety deposit box --- can't be too careful with photos that you love so much!

Love the book case idea, so well done. Would anyone happen to know where the striped blanket on the chair in front of it came from? Trying to track it down.
