Who Lives Here: Minnie MidCentury
Location: West Village, New York City
Size: 360 square feet
What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? My favorite element is all the light from the two huge skylights I have — one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom. I also love my hardwood floors. They're gorgeous! I also love the fact that my tiny home is just the perfect size for me.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? Not many interior designers, furniture manufacturers, etc., really understand what small is. I have to laugh when a magazine has an issue entitled "All About Small!", and the smallest home in it is around 1,500 square feet. I find certain magazines - LivingEtc., Elle Decor - a great resource. Also HGTV and the net.

Ok this is a little strange:
why are there two photos almost exactly, but not quite, the same?
I am assuming you made a mistake when you uploaded the pics?

Oh, I love the watercolor(?) illustrations of NYC iconic exteriors on newsprint(?). Can you tell me where you found them? A crisp and clean abode.

I was going to say something along the same lines -- are there other pics which show other vantages of the apt? Where does the inhabitant sleep?

I like the furniture. However, like the others have noted, it's very hard to get a feel for how the space is being used.

I don't know if the elevator opens into the apartment but, I think it would be noisy! No picture of the bathroom or the sleep arrangement? otherwise nice decor!

I think all the photos on "small cool" posts should show things that show what's cool about the small. The closeup of the art piece doesn't do much that way.

Have to concur ~ two duplicate photos and one artwork close up don't give me much feel for the space ~ which is a shame, as I would love to have seen more!

What stove is that? It looks gorgeous! I'm likely to replace my stove soon and I'd love to know the size and make of it.

Curious....where does Minnie sleep? On that tiny sofa?

looks like she sleeps on the other side of the kitchen?

LOVE the restrained color scheme in the living space- the white and black and orange look so graphic and fun together, and definetely work beautifully with the minimal furnishings. i want to see more.

Can't go wrong with black and white....ever. I LOVED the artwork. Looks like charcoal drawings on newspaper print. Did you purchase those or draw them yourself. I may cheat and steal the idea. I also like wood framing them as a set.

This place looks so cute, but I'm hesitating to give it a thumbs-up since I can't really see how the space is being used beyond the sofa area and the kitchen.

Minnie: cute space and lovely use of the color orange. I'm distressed! Where do you rest your head at night? I pray there is a murphy bed in there somewhere.

It's refreshing to see someone with a small TV instead of a huge flatscreen dominating the room. Very cute place.

I would give ten thumbs up if possible! Please let the readers know if you sleep on the mini-sofa, so they can vote properly.

oh, or is it that you have a bed in the "dinign area" from your sketch?
view mihaela's profile
It would have been nice to get a better sense of how things are rearranged - like where's the sleeping area?

Thanks for all your comments!! Here are some answers:
jac7890 - My entire apartment wasn't camera ready, so I sent in my best shots.
appelek - I did the watercolors myself. I saw something similar in a magazine for about $6,000 per painting! My six pictures cost me about $6 each to make - Ikea frames, maps from an old atlas, matting I did myself
keifers - elevator does not open in the apartment.
jesikka - the stove is ancient! The door is loose and it takes about 2 days to roast a chicken.
shellyinMSP - I have an Aero bed that was tucked away in the closet for these shots. I recently designed a folding bed that I hope to have built very soon.
mihaela - When I first moved in, I made the dining area a sleeping alcove, but now it's back to being a dining area.
Thanks so much for asking,
Minnie

Hi Minnie,
You have a beautiful home. I love what you have done with it so far. Could you tell me about the credenza/sideboard? Did you buy it or have it custom-made? Also, I love the little black cat figurine. I would love to buy one for my sister, who had an all-black cat named . . .Minnie!
view keasus's profile
Hi keasus,
The credenza is from Ikea. It's about 4 years old, so I don't know if they still carry it. The little black cat is a dog squeaky toy and is from Pylones http://www.pylones-usa.com/pylones/indexpylones.php
Thanks for you nice comments!

I think what we can see is great, and hope that if you don't make it to the finals you will re-enter next year when we can see the whole place.

What a great website, Minnie. Thanks for the heads up. I've found a least a dozen items I want to order (bad for my budget, but oh well . . .).

I'm trusting the rest of your home is comparable to the darling living room. Or did you just shove all your junk in the bedroom or closet and shut the door? ;) Well I guess the only way to find out it to give you a thumbs up and hope to see photos of your bednook and washroom in the finals! Good Luck!
