Small Cool 2009: Naomi's Double Duty
Little Division #18

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: Naomi + Husband + puppy
Location: Jersey City, New Jersey
Size: 660 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? As much as I'd love to, I can't plan the decor of my home. Instead, I let my heart guide me to the pieces I can't live without... Quite accidentally, I've picked up items that not only fit well together, but can be rearranged on a whim to create entirely different looks so that I'm never bored in our ever-changing space. Our home is filled with mismatched items from different times and places that somehow work together. Individually, these objects hold memories from our travels, trials and tribulations. Collectively, they spell out Home.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? The hardest part about furnishing our home has been dealing with the lack of storage. Aside from donating mounds of our belongings to the Salvation Army, I have had to make sure that every piece of furniture does double duty. The TV cabinet holds my tools in addition to electronics. A mid-century armoire in the dining area has been repurposed as a pantry... I've learned to live with less, and integrate the rest into the decor.

You have a great eye for collecting. This space looks really homey and very interesting at the same time. A place I would like to visit :-)

I have been looking for a wooden extend-able wall lamp like the one over your pantry cabinet...any tips on what to search for or where to find one?

WOW. I agree regarding the cabinet in the final photo. That piece is simply stunning.

I also like the mix of metal and wood for your television stand. Neat idea that I might just steal!

Perfection. I wish I could just pick up pieces as I go along like you, but I can't stand the inbetween-er faze

Naomi here.

Thanks for all the compliments!!! Really brightened up my lazy Friday morning :)

For all those wondering: The TV cabinet is from BoConcept, the armoire in the last picture is an ebay find and the extendable lamp I found in a second hand shop in Copenhagen last year.

me likes. love the textures, colors, etc.

i appreciate that your home fits all the things you love, and need, yet still looks well-edited w/o seeming over-cluttery. it's really really nice.

it's unfortunate that *your* salvation army is so far away from where i live. (in fact, "mine" is closing down soon)

I like how full of personality your place is -- cozy and warm, not all full of itself. ;-)

Also am interested in your bedroom rug. Is it cotton? Can you tell me more about where a person could find something similar?

In the LR, I especially like your nicely organized top row of white books.

Everything feels like it's in the right place. Feels larger than its size. Very well-organized. I love it.

Where can I get the bedroom lamp?

What a cute puppy ... he looks so well-behaved, too! Love how cosy the apt is, and how well you've used the space. The coffee table is amazing, as is the black and white picture above the armoire. Love the international feel of the apt.

Your bedroom is my favorite room:) It reminds me of when we lived in Jerusalem, and anything that brings back those memories I love:) Good luck!

Wow, That is an amazing use of space. I love the lamp hanging near the bed! What kind of dog is that? Is it a pure breed?

Hey...another Jersey home! Even though you have a collection of different styles, they all seem to work and make an interesting mix. Your home is very charming and my favorite is your bedroom with the framed quilt above the bed and the layered bedding. Nice job!

Also...in the second photo, where did you get the floor lamp behind the chair? And your dog is adorable!

The whole apartment is a big mishmash of items... The coffee table I brought back from India, the lamp behind the armchair is a hand-me-down and the ones in the bedroom, I made :)
