Small Cool 2009: Sarah's Jackson Heights Studio
Tiny Division #54

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: Sarah + Allen
Location: Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City
Size: 541 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? I recently moved into a studio apartment with my boyfriend, Allen. He loves to mix drinks, but our small space is limited to have a big fancy bar table/storage. Allen added the glass bar shelves in the corner of the kitchen to draw attention to that area of the room. It comes with alternating color LED lights, which really stand out with dimmed lights and candles. This had become one of my favorite elements in our home. Now, we can live and entertain in style without having a big fancy bar.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? The apartment is a 541 square foot alcove studio. The challenge for us was to furnish the limited space so we could have a dining area, entertainment area, sleeping area and my workspace. Rather than partition the space, we chose to leave it open to increase the flow. We used neutral colors contrasted with some dark brown furniture and window panels. Then I framed some artwork and photos and hung them where I felt they stood out. We prefer low-standing furniture so we purchased a sectional sofa, coffee table and bed frame, which stand low. In contrast, we decided to purchase a high table and bar stools for our dining needs because it feels more like its own space when elevated like that. As for decorative items we purchased accessories from Ikea, Urban Outfitters and Bed Bath & Beyond to bring in some color and fluff to our apartment. All in all, we are really happy with the way our apartment turned out. It has exceeded our expectations and feels like home.

This is the first one I've liked so much I've actually voted! (I know, that's terrible, I'm lazy.) I love the layout and that very nice floor.

nice choreography of everything here - the stools under the dining table do not look comfortable, but it's a great decision for the space - well done sarah! you got alot in there and it all looks good together!

I love the frames (with built-in ledges?) above the couch. Where are they from? And not to be a total mooch- but where are those gorgeous lights next to your bed from?

For me this does not work at all. It looks like everything has been picked from a catalog... there doesn't appear to be anything unique, interesting or personal in the space. There's no color, all the artwork looks like it has come from the same book and there's way too much micro-fabric. A large mirror in the entry would go a long way, a color on the walls besides beige, maybe some floor lamps or table lamps? I do like the West Elm duvet cover and the layered floor to ceiling drapes throughout.

I agree w/ Jacksonlalonde - and I still don't get the point of putting art on individual ledges that are the same size as the framed art, or the rug that's far too small, or the printer under the desk where your feet want to be (why not put it in the giant cabinet to it's left?)

"where is the couch from?"

West Elm - Discontinued.

I agree - it looks like it was furnished for a condo catalogue company, or something equally boring. everything is too new, beige, and unlived in... get a few cats!

The owner is probably petite so the printer isn't in the way besides you can't use a printer if its in the cabinet. The art on the shelves fits nicely and the original art work is a nice touch. Overall this is a beautiful apartment and looks like a very nice place to spend a lot of time.

was this posted on AT a few weeks ago as a house tour? i remember those light up shelves and someone also making a comment then about the pic ledges being the same size as the frame. maybe swap the 3 short ledges out for the long ribba ledge. that way if you ever wanted to change the art pieces you'd have more options (e.g. one big art piece instead of 3 smaller ones). but if you like it that way then who cares what we think!

@robino, the pic ledges and lights around the bed are from ikea (ribba and gyllen respectively).

i agree with some ppl's comments (being catalogue-y and the rug's small), but overall i like the space. it seems like a very comfy place!

I like it. I think it feels calm and light and tasteful. I think the neutral palette compliments the space and furniture.

The only negative comments I have are about the rug (ditto that it is way too small, a larger version of the same one would look great) and that there are too many stools jammed into one small area (the counter and the table next to the kitchen).

I also agree that a mirror in the entryway would look fabulous.

Good job!

This is at those Jackson Heights co-ops off of 74th Street, right? The one with those ads of the guy with the really big head... You can see their ad on the side of the building as you go into the 74th/Roosevelt station off the 7 train. I believe they're called Sheila Terrace and Birchwood House?

Great apartments, at least the model apartments that I saw. Always had a steady flow of people coming to check them out. These were built in the 1950s, and were just recently renovated. Brokers do a great job marketing - but I think the price point is a little on the high side for the amount of space you get (between $200-300K) - you can get into a pre-war building for more space in the lower end of the price point or even cheaper, and in the historic district of JH.

Great job with the decor though.

Sorry, but I have to agree with jacksonlalonde and bepsf, especially about the rug under the coffee table. It's way too small. It's a little bland for me, but it's well-organized and lacks a lot of clutter which is good in a small space. And if you love it, that's all that matters! But I think a larger rug would go a long way in making it feel more cohesive and would actually give you more of a feeling of space believe it or not!

Ah remember this one from a post - sorry won't vote. Still don't think you really tried for a mature dining room - it's still something I expected to see in college.

"...besides you can't use a printer if its in the cabinet."

Um, yeah you can.
I keep mine in a deep drawer of my entertainment center - just open the drawer, turn it on and it's ready to go.

"I keep mine in a deep drawer of my entertainment center"

the key word is entertainment center they are built to handle cables and such.

Putting it in the cabinet would require the cabinet to be empty and not filled with books and you'd have to take it out to use it and for a designer that would be annoying.
That's a large format printer it might fit but not very well and the paper would have to extend out the back.

Very pretty... where is that smocked duvet cover from, I've been seeing it all around lately? Looks lovely in your place. Also... That wine bottle holder in your dining area is neat, where is it from? I've just seen it in another publication being used for a hand towel holder in the bathroom...

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for all the comments and critique.

To answer your questions:
The Wall light are from Ikea, Gyllen.
The sofa is from west elm, discontinued now.
Wall Shelf from Ikea LJUSDAL
Frame and Ledge are also from Ikea.

Since I'm a designer, I use a large format printer, that prints 13x19 size or larger. I'm sure that it's not going to fit into the bookcase. The paper is easier to load in when it's on the ground like that. =)

And for ChrisGal, I know you mention this before, but I've also commented that when I get a big house I'l' get a new dinning table. As for now, I don't think I'll throw away my "new" high table set that was expensive away.

Oh yea, and it's co-op in Jackson Heights. Thank you again for all the thumb-up, and compliment and support, best!

Sarah - was just saying. Just think about this - how much money did you waste buying this one and then if you get a house, then buying a proper table.....you wasted a lot of money there and you won't get your full money back on the one you have. You will be likely to be selling it to someone in college and I'd guess you get $100 tops.

If she would have gotten a larger rug, it would actually make the place appear smaller than it already is. The low standing furniture in contrast with the high ones are a really great idea!

The place looks classic and modern, two very big thumbs up from me.

Hi ChrisGal,
Maybe I'm confused on your suggestion..
But what I was thinking is, I just move in this newly apt without any furniture. I decide to spend around $900 on this CB2 high table set. (Which I did). So are you suggesting I should have gotten a dinning table before I move in or I should go out get one and replace the current one now? Because to me it won't make sense to replace it now. Then if later I move into a big house and have a big dinning able and use the current one in a bar area later. I don't have to sell it at all. I'm sure some people will agree with me on this. That I don't have to sell this high table set, when I move later on.
But Thanks for the suggestion, because I'll be sure to get a formal dinning table later on. :)

And for iisandy1214 -
Yea thank you for your sweet comments, I had a 5' x 8' number rug before, but it got mess up by hot chocolate stain...so I had to get a small and inexpensive rug for replacement. I liked that pattern too, I'm trying to go for neutral/brown tone for the whole space.

Sarah - I could go out today and buy at least two tables like yours (brand new) for that price. Not so budget friendly.

Hi ChrisGal,
That's pretty good deal you get right there. But everyone's budget is different base on their living as mine may be different then your. :)

Well if you hadn't noticed, a lot of stuff goes on how you would do something on a budget - I could refurnish my entire living room for that and the dining table in my kitchen.

ChrisGal- That's pretty good if you can refurnish your whole living room for that. Having a budget also mean to planned out to making your goal meet. I make my budget based on how much I make and how much I need, and I'm sure it's different then your budget.
Maybe $900.00 seems over budget to you. But to me, it's pretty affordable, and I like it the way it is. : )

Well then if you could afford $900 for a table, you should be able to afford something bigger than a studio.

Love your coffee table? Where did you get it? I like the combo. Would work perfectly in my small space. Glass to take up little visual space and the dark wood to match my new tv stand.
