Sofabed by Harri Koskinen
Sofa Sleeper of the Week

Finnish designer Harri Koskinen has designed tableware, textiles, furniture, audio equipment, glassware and underwear. When I met him in his Helsinki studio space last week — I was most interested in his Sofabed, a design he launched at the Milan fair earlier this year.

Sofabed is quite large — it easily and comfortably seats 3. The backrest is very deep and easily supports a tray or laptop.

The transition is very intuitive — the backrest unfolds and fits snuggly (and flush) in between the armrests to create a double bed. As an added bonus, the backrest and be lifted completely away from the sofa and function as an additional mattress on the floor. SofaBed can sleep 4 in a pinch!

The only drawback to the transition process is the somewhat cumbersome size of the separate back cushion. It is much easier to maneuver with a second person.

The cost is prohibitive to import to the US, but I thought the design was especially smart and a good solution for a sofa that would only occasionally be used as a bed.

Just a "One Night Stand" wannabee.

I like this better than the one night stand. No need to clear a giant area in front of the couch, and no upholstery resting on the floor when opened. More simple moving parts = win in my book.

I like that it's attractive in whatever stage it's in, and that it's so accommodating. It looks as if it needs to be in a very large space to appreciate the design.
