apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Lighting Plus

5_11_lightingplus.jpgDIY fun. Want to find a lighting solution for your apartment? Want to build one yourself? Looking for undercounter lights? Looking for slim extension cords? Lighting Plus and it's two clones (one on Canal Street and one on the upper west side) are essential resources.

Nicknamed, "Stoner Electric," Lighting Plus is all open bins and accessories hanging from the walls. It is one stop shopping for party lights, work lights and fairly rudimentary decorative lighting. We come here for the elements. We built a Socket Chandelier from here. You can buy all kinds of electrical cord by the yard, switch boxes, switches, dimmers, bulbs and even retro Lava Lamps.

Service is excellent as there are always a few guys hanging around to help out and prices are good, but not low.

I agree... one of the best low-rent lighting stores around. Not really convenient to me anymore, but will go out of my way to go there since I know they'll have everything I'll need in one place.

I love places like this where all sorts of parts are just laying out there to inspire you. I've rewired some lamps and created some others from odd parts from this place. Like adult legos. Great way to fill your DIY and elegance quotas in one fell swoop!

Hey, speaking of lighting, can anyone recommend a good compact fluorescent for task lighting? I like them for the energy savings, but also, in the summer, I prefer to avoid the excess heat of halogens.

I've found some decent soft warm-colored compacts, but the bright ones I've tried were way too harsh and ugly. There's gotta be a good one out there, I just can't find it!

thanks!

I'm a big fan of the Espressivo from Ikea. It's a soft bright Halogen bulb, comes in black or white, and has a great telescoping directional neck. Plus, at $6.99 it's hard to go wrong! I have one on my desk and one by my bed (though it can be a little bright to read by).

Sadly available only in stores. Sorry, Tennessee!
