(Here's Post #2 from Janie, one of the finalists vying for a blogging position at the upcoming AT:The Nursery. Comment away.)

2006-12-13-homerulelogo.pngHome Rule is not the first place to come to mind when thinking of a destination for your baby’s needs.

2006-12-13-homerule.pngThe tiny housewares shop is located on the now hip 14th Street strip it shares with other independently owned boutiques in Northwest DC. Home Rule is a long time local favorite of ours and other design-inclined Washingtonians looking for a well-edited selection of home accessories.

We shopped here frequently when furnishing our previous loft – everything from an emergency shower curtain (don’t forget the rings) to a colander. But it wasn’t until we had our little one recently that I noticed its focused, albeit small, selection of baby products.

Home Rule also carries a few SKUs that can be appropriated for use as baby ware.

2006-12-13-homerulewashcloth.png Our favorite find thus far has been the deliciously graphic and perfectly pint-sized washcloths by Cram Cream.

A whole slew of yummy designs is available so I stop in often to make sure baby has all of them in his collection, including larger bath towels and hand towels.

2006-12-13-dishespng.pngHome Rule also stocks Cram Cream melamine trays and cups – both good as baby tableware or for organizing his lotions and potions.

You also can find an assortment of other mealtime and bath time accoutrements including French Bull melamine dinnerware and Dinnersaurs utensils by Fred, all of which is good to look at but not too precious to use.

The smallish store is well organized, making good use of height in order to compensate for its limited width (those with strollers need to pay attention). It shops like a hip Bed Bath and Beyond distilled down to its essential design core.

We hope Home Rule will expand its kid offerings in the future. Definitely not your one-stop shop for all things baby, but a good source for baby ware nonetheless.

I live in dc and am so glad to see a dc store recognized here! A lot of my kitchen items come from Home Rules and the surrounding stores are just as cool if not cooler! Definitely check it out if you're in dc!

Ooh, I'm excited to see you mention a DC store! I echo what Alex says--Home Rule itself is great, and there are several other great stores on the same block of 14th Street--Pop and Go Mama Go! are especially great.

Love Home Rule! They always have clever items. I second (or third?) Go Mama Go, that store rocks.

Another fan...there's another good similar shop on 8th St SE (Barracks Row) called Homebody. It has more furnishings, though, and a smaller selection of kitchen products.
