We first met James Murphy a few years ago and are proud to spotlight his talents. James creates wonderful organic modern furniture and cites Scandinavian modernism, mid-century Italian furniture design, Japanese design and architecture, and the history of furniture craft in early America as his primary influences...

A native of Staten Island, James studied sculpture and photography at SUNY Purchase under Jan Groover and Gregory Crewdson, and then went on to apply his skills and good eye to cabinetry and woodwork. He has worked as a restoration carpenter at the Frick Collection and currently teaches at both Pratt Institute and the School of Visual Arts.

One of his first pieces, Flight Deck, was a winner of Interior Design Magazine's 2004 "Future Furniture" competition. His work has also been featured in Elle Decor, New York Spaces, and Le Journal de la Maison, among others. Apart from Flight Deck, we also like the long, attenuated structure of his Exis Alter.

I'm sorry. This is in Staten Island?

What the hell is he doing here? I hope he finds enough clients... this island is in dire need of style.
