AT Survey: Which Way Should Toilet Paper Roll?

2005_1_19_tp.jpgOk, we ran this survey a few years ago after a little tiff we had with our beloved. Now it's time to see if anything's changed:
We just received a shocking dressing down on the homefront. We were told that we have not been putting the toilet paper in the holder the "right way." We were told that TP should fall out of the holder, "waterfalling" down the front and NOT lick up from the back. The photograph shows the "right" way. The other is "wrong." Before we cave in completely, we thought we would see if this was a generally held belief and we have just been in the dark.... What do you do in your apartment???

whatever way.
but the "right" way is the way my cats like it, ..to just destroy it all and roll themselves into it.
seriously. like the commercial puppy lab, just cats..

I think it looks so nice and neat coming out from the back. My husband likes it overhand, though. I put it on the "wrong way" to piss him off, and then he changes it back. It's kind of a tradition now.

yes, it should always roll down the front. marge simpson once lost her kids for putting the toilet paper roll on backwards.

If it slid down the back you couldn't have fun with toilegami!

I always do it the "right" way - down the front. A friend does hers the "wrong" way and I like to change it on her when I visit.

CAT Owners (down the back)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never paid attention until the past few weeks. I wish I had noticed sooner. The youngest and dimmest of my two cats loves to unroll TP from all three bathrooms.

I noticed by accident that if it's facing the back it won't unroll so easy. Making the entire thing much less fun. New we always put the rolls on this way, and for the past few weeks she's played with it less and less. Now she has no desire to do this anymore.

This is a habit our cat has had for years that we broke by accident. It may not work on a bright cat. This one is cute, but very simple.

the answer to this question would be completely arbitrary, if it weren't for one fact - the underhand/down the back way helps you tear off the paper with one hand (at least when the roll's not nearly gone) by providing a little resistance. there is no practical reason to do it overhand.

Another cat owner here so down the back or she unrolls it.

I remember a distant time when I didn't notice this at all. At some point in my life, I developed the firm conviction that the right way was cascading over the top. Why, I simply don't know, but I now always make a judgment - right way, wrong way.

I've cleaned up a lot of floor with shredded TP from it hanging the right way. My 11 YO cats still do this if I blow it and forget.

I was taught in the military that TP always rolls down the front. As well, I've noticed that most 4 5 star hotels also have it rolling down the front...

(However, with cats in the house, it is tempting to try it tha backwards way -- thx stillreign!)

TP etiquette requires ALWAYS unrolling from the top forwards. That's why hotels do it the "right" way and then make a little neat triangular fold to let you know you have a fresh roll to use. I can't stand it when a roll is on upside down.

Seriously? There cannot possibly be a right or a wrong way to do this. Preference? Yes, absolutely. But right or wrong? I don't think so.

I think most of you are joking about this anyways... (at least I hope so!)

I was recently told that by hanging the TP to the front of the roll you would actually use less TP when tearing it off. I have been doing it this way for a few weeks, and I do seem to be using less paper. However it could be that I'm just more conscious of how much I'm using. Either way, I'm still using less. (And personally, I don't care which way it hangs.)

When the tp hangs down the back, a humid bathroom combined with a full roll will make the tp 'stick' to the wall or mounting surface. PLUS, dirty little hands rubbing up against the back wall trying to grab the tp makes for a dirty back wall. eeew. Who cleans that?

There is a reason for front waterfalling.

Down the front, but my dogs will mess with it either way, so it's usually sitting next to the sink.

If the puppy gets her paws on a roll, she takes the whole thing outside to play with (EVERYTHING IS A TOY), usually just after I drink half a pot of coffee.

I never consciously thought about it before as a correct way, but we have ours the front way. I've noticed it was always harder to get to, would end up tearing or pulling to much tp if it was in the back. I associated it with being more awkward than "wrong", but I suppose ease and a general overwhelming preference is how simple household tasks like setting a table or putting on tp have developed "right" or "wrong" ways to be done.

I completely avoid this issue with a vertical TP holder - there is no right or wrong way when it is "standing up."

Funny story... During high school, boyfriend's family had a condo in a resort area near our hometown. Obviously, kids being kids (with keys), some of us had access when the folks weren't in residence. Being the good girl, I cleaned up after a small gathering one Saturday night only to have us busted the next day by boyfriend's mother who decided on a relaxing Sunday by the lake - all because the bathroom toilet paper was hung the wrong way. Just saying, some people have preferences...

Tall guys = TP over the top.

This doesn't affect the ladies (uh, well, most I'm guessing), but for a tall guy takin' care of business while standing, it's really, really awkward to get to under-hung TP from a roll that's mounted kinda low to the floor.

Not that we would ever use TP for the business we do standing up...I'm just sayin' if we did.

toilet paper goes down the front, and paper towels go down the back! it feels unnatural to tear the toilet paper from the back because it's so low to the ground.

I once had a girlfriend to whom it was veryveryvery important to always under-hang the roll. If I ever over-hung it, she'd flip it around.

So one day...

...I unspooled 5 or 6 yards then rolled it back up, alternating the direction every 2 feet or so. I then hung the roll OVER THE TOP.

Later, as I listened carefully through the door, I could hear her promptly flip the TP around the other way. Unrolling sound. Quite expletive. Flipping sound. More unrolling. Louder expletive...eventual screaming expletive.

AlmostAD - pure, pure genius!!! - ludos to you!

Cat unravelling people - ever thought about shutting the bathroom door so your cats don't go in there?
I, personally, don't want to be doing hygenic things in a room that a pet has been walking round in with the same paws it uses to cover its poo!!

I just think it's so much classier if it rolling down the back. That way you don't see the paper just hanging there, fluttering about. Man, my friend and I would literally switch each others rolls in our prospective bathrooms, just to prove our points. We finally stopped doing that, realizing neither of us were going to change. (Though her way with it hanging in the front is obviously wrong. ;-)

"yes, it should always roll down the front. marge simpson once lost her kids for putting the toilet paper roll on backwards."

actually NO! she lost her kids because she put her toilet paper on in the "improper overhand fashion"!

i always put it on the "lick up" way...less chance of it rolling all out when someone yanks on it that way too

If you're reaching underneath a roll of toilet paper to have to grab the end of it, you're getting your hands on the other part. If you live alone and never have guests, it's fine. Otherwise, it's not really OK. That's one reason that over is better. I'm really not that much of a germ freak, but I'm just sayin'.

i don't think that it is entirely off-topic. it's about house-keeping etiquette. it definitely seems awkward trying to get toiletpaper when it is underhanded. i suppose my husband doesn't notice as it's a 50/50 toss up whether he rolls it "right". we've never had a conversation about it though.

I agree it looks nicer going over the front but those with cats and kids know: if you don't want 500 meters of toilet paper wrapped around the furniture, keep it tucked behind.

I am definitely an ardent over-the-top person for the many reasons others have mentioned, but I thought I'd point out that some brands of toilet paper have decorations in their quilting (Northern is one). If you put the roll on the wrong way, the flowers will appear upside down.

if the toilet paper is being dispensed around the level of your ass when you're seated, it should roll over the top. if it's higher, it should roll under, creating a dispenser.

and i'm now totally confused by curtis's comment. what do you mean you're touching the other part of the roll? how little toilet paper are you using anyway? germs aren't like acid. plus, why would reaching for the underside make you have to touch any other part of the roll?

half the time my roll is on the back of the toilet anyway.
