Lunchtime Survey: Eva Zeisel v. Edith Heath

7-27-heath.jpg

Ceramic Genius face off. For this lunchtime survey we finally get to two women who tower in the ceramic design field. Born in 1906 in Budapest, Eva Zeisel came to the US in '38 and burst to fame with designs such as her eccentric, biomorphic "Town and Country" line of dishes, produced by Red Wing Pottery. She's still working today and Jonathan Adler's a devotee. Edith Heath (1911-2005) is part of Los Angeles' many gifts to US modern design. Founding her own shop in the mid 40's, her pottery soon was selling all over the country and was distinctive for its stoneware body and glaze development. Her deep, rich colors are amazing, and today Heath Ceramics still manufactures a great line of tableware and tile.

(This will run for exactly one hour.)

Tough camparison, cause both are wonderful. But Zeisel IS STILL designing an amazing range of products -- she's more on a par with Russel Wright.

Heath found her niche and crafted well.

They each deserve total respect.

Yep. Tough choice ... Zeisel has a period look which I love ... Heath seems to be timelessly modern ... but ya, tough choice.

Well, Heath (my personal favorite) can't really design anymore, as she's been dead many years!
