Who's cuter? In the realm of the male television design personalities, Nate Berkus (www.nateberkus.com) and Ty Pennington (www.typenningtonstyle.com) are certainly top of the heap. Nate, who we met last winter, makes Oprah blush, had a huge hit with HOME RULES and does some very nice contemporary work that has been copied to our reader's flickr pages. Ty, a former model and carpenter, leapt to fame on Trading Spaces and now has his own magazine and - with Sears - the Ty Pennington Style line of bedding, tabletop items, and bath accessories. But if the chips were down....

plus, didn't ty get arrested for dui? not so cute.

ty just rubs me the wrong way.

Ty's voice is annoying...but I still love Extreme Makeover Home Edition! Cry everytime!!
Nate is definitely hotter and I like his designs more!
view BklynTee's profile
Cutie pie Nate of course! His stuff is slightly classier albeit still too Pottery Barn-esque. If I had the money, I'd woo Miles Redd to decorate my home.

...but if the way Ty whores out his name on products is any indication...

OMG, Ty looks and sounds like a crackhead.

I also see two questions...
"Who's cuter?" and "Who would you like to design your home?"
So, Nate.
And Nate.
Unless there was a substantial amount of wood to be handled. Then, Ty.
Or whomever had the biggest "budget."

I prefer Ty's style. He knows how to work that mid century vibe. Nate on the other hand is too bland and traditional for my tastes. Not to mention at least Ty's collection and line are affordable.
view iceblink's profile
Nate's style is bland??? What shots have you been looking at?
view patrick (the other one)'s profile
Ty is an utter buffoon. Nate wins by default.
view shani-o's profile
shani-o, I couldn't agree more. Although, I do like Ty's style at times -- can I duct tape his mouth? ;)
view katalyst's profile
nate takes the cake, ty takes the pie.
view kdkaboom's profile
patrick (the other one), your "wood" and "budget" comment is hilarious. and dirty. and true.
i love nate except for what he did to that poor woman's midtown studio on oprah. fabric overkill. hopefully she doesn't smoke.
his own west village makeover (also featured on oprah) was pure perfection.

Whomever uses the least amount of MDF in the final design, because really, they (the guys) don't look all that different. And unlike youthful good looks, good design can last much, much longer.

AT:LA blogged Ty Pennington's new LA store - pretty positive reviews. http://la.apartmenttherapy.com/la/venice/ty-pennington-adhd-opening-in-venice-029956
On the cutie-pie factor, Nate gets my vote. Plus, he just seems so calm. Ty, on the other hand, would stress me out cause he's so cranked up all the time. But he did name the new store ADHD, so maybe that explains it.

I find Ty's yelling to be one of the most grating noises ever to come from a television set. He's also not cute.
view surplusj's profile
Ty kind of looks like Nate's Dad.

I find the concept of hiring a designer on the basis of personal "hotness" a bit disturbing. Not sure out of the entire pool of designers either would make my short list, but Nate is at least a real designer, so he would get my vote, if I hadn't logged in too late for yet another survey.
But to go off on a tangent, of the various TV designers I always thought that Vern Yip was consistently the best of the lot.

I ran into Nate last week at Neimans. We were shopping for shoes and he needed a pair for his trip to LA this week.
He's a charming cutie pie but really short....but he did have something stuffed into those jeans he was wearing quite well...in the front. The back was void of anything including a wallet.
Now Ty is cute and I love his energry. I have a weakness for tall men and his hands are perfect.
When you got down to it, for me....they both can get it...anyway they wanted it.
I'm such a naughty little tart...and I love it!!

I'm pretty sure Ty is on crystal meth.

Well we haven't seen Nate showing off his abs on Oprah yet, but Ty seems a bit too commercialized in a somewhat cheezy way. Haven't seen enough of his design work to really judge his talent.
So is Nate's book a success because its a useful, good book or because of the huge Oprah fan base that bought it? In general I do like what I've seen of his work so he got my vote.

Nate is such a talent. His portfolio on his website has some amazingly refined, yet comfortable spaces. I think Nate has a much more NY - east coast - sophisticated style while Ty is more laid-back west coast casual. They both have their place.
And I still get choked-up thinking of Nate recounting his horrific experience in the tsunami disaster.

I'd go for the gay guy any time...Nate.

re: "I find the concept of hiring a designer on the basis of personal 'hotness' a bit disturbing."
Um, I really don't think that is seriously what anyone is recommending. We're just having some fun.
But, all things equal (budget, style, etc.) wouldn't *you* pick the designer you thought was cuter?
Personally, I just love that both of these boys are breaking the "mincing queen" stereotype of male interior designers.

I got to this too late to vote, but NATE ALL THE WAY.
Ty can move his big bus out of my way. No interest.

I checked out the link for Ty's store in CA and was quite impressed. Much more interesting than the little I've seen on the TV show (which gets on my nerves).

I just want to point out that Ty's personality is very different than what you see on ABC. He just does what the producers want ... and producers want what the Network asks for ... based on what they think viewers want... so blame yourselves!
I've worked on a few HGTV shows, and while I've never worked with Ty, I've worked with photographers and contractors who were involved in Extreme Makeover Home Edition.
They tell me that he's very quiet and kind and nice and normal.
Clearly, ABC picked up on Ty's quirkiness from Trading Spaces (when he'd sit in a dresser drawer as if it were a canoe... and take Paige for a ride with him) and made him amplify that part of his personality for their show.
Just as the show used to be about an Extreme MAKEOVER - and is now just a TEAR IT DOWN AND BUILD SOMETHING WORTHLESS show.

Oh I see how it is... I come to this particular site expecting to have to make "mature" comments and what do I find?
Tigerbeat.
Well, it is with an upturned nose and perhaps an indignant, Katherine Hepburn calibur raised eyebrow that I state that someone of my position should never have to make these kinds of choices.
Good day, Sir!

I think they each draw very much from where they live. Nate has more breadth to his talent, sophistication, and an appreciation for industrial that I like. Ty's work is just more limited, although it's a style I like a lot.
Even though Ty is from Atlanta, he has really nailed Cali style, and if I still lived there, I might pick him. But I grew up in Chicago, and live on the East Coast, so it's Nate for me.

view everythingistaken's profile
I'm not certain Hepburn would raise an eyebrow about this, rahley I'm not rahley.
As for wood, poles, buses, and budgets, actually no. Cute is lunch or a drink. Talent is dinner and a contract. We remember Cavafy the toad because of the beauty of his poetry; the cute boys he wrote about are ultimately faceless and forgettable.
Signing off for the night in favor of a city lovelier far than this....
