Survey: Do You Go To Bed with Your Laptop?

11-12-bedtime.jpgIt's 11pm and we're in bed again with our laptop. It's become a favorite (and often workrelated) end of the day practice to get in bed with the computer and check email and the news before turning out the light.

We're pretty sure this is not healthy in the long term, but it's sort of a guilty pleasure.

Sonia does it and wrote about it over at Unplggd in August.

What do you think? Is it good? Are you in bed reading this now? What's the last thing you look at before going to bed?

I do it all the time. But! Don't leave your laptop sitting on soft surfaces like the blanket or mattress, my dad says it blocks the vents and isn't good for the computer. So slide a book under or some other firm surface. And I usually put it under the bed (on top of a storage box) when I go to sleep so it doesn't fall and I won't step on it when i get up.

I'm sitting in bed right now reading! I usually slide a book underneath if I'm going to be doing any extended browsing. My old computer used to overheat and shut off, so I learned the hard way to keep something underneath it. I love using my laptop in bed, though. When I'm done I put it on my trunk/coffeetable next to the bed, because I'm paranoid about knocking it off. The old lappy was killed in a similar fashion.

Oh no. These things should be kept separate, in my opinion. I know people who wonder why they don't sleep well, who just happen to also be TV watchers and internet surfers right up until lights off and eyes closed. These folks are also less likely to eat breakfast (or are in such a mad dash in the morning that they don't have time), drink lots and lots of coffee or Diet Coke (or both), and just can't seem to "get it together".

I'm not judging..just putting two and two together.

Gosh no. But on a sleep-in day, I might stumble to the den, grab the laptop, and go back to bed with it. It's nice to start the day with a little Apartment Therapy.

I do it usually in the morning! Because I'm a student I have lazy mornings so I sit up in bed with my laptop and do some browsing or some research. I am doing it right now! In the evening though I usually prefer to read a book and wind down.

I do it, but I always sit it on a table by my bed before I actually turn in. Poor baby gets hot if you block the vent.

Yes - of course.

I also often have my laptop in my kitchen when I'm cooking... it's also my cookbook.

Now that I finally have a lot of space in my home... more space than I really know what to do with, I don't do it anymore. When I shared a house with 4 other people and only had my own room as sanctuary I did it all the time (I was also working on my thesis at the time, so I spent more time on my computer than on anything else).

Nowadays it moves between our over-sized coffee table and my desk. I mostly just check the blogs, update my own, and that's it. My computer life is far less glamorous these days.

Mine never comes to bed as I would be afraid I would fall asleep and it would fall onto the floor and break as does my remote control at least once a month.

I never allow the laptop in the bedroom except on Saturday mornings when I am changing the sheets and listening to NPR online. There are three reasons for this: 1) My BF and I have made a pact that there should be no electronics in the bedroom (no TV's, no laptops, no computers, no VCR's, no personal DVD players, etc.) The only things in my bedroom that are electronic is the clock radio and the lamps. We find it hard enough to have downtime with each other that we don't need the option of added distractions.

2) I am DEATHLY afraid of falling asleep with the laptop on my bed and waking up to a fire raging on the pillow next to me. Those suckers get HOT, and I'd hate to lose life and/or limb because I couldn't stop refreshing craigslist.

And 3) I really enjoy those last few quiet minutes of the day, with a low light on, a good book and the kitty grooming himself at the foot of the bed. When he jumps down heads to his bed, I know it's time to hit the light and put my head on the pillow.

That said, I will admit to staying up late in the living room far too long in order to circumnavigate the “no electronics” rule. The laptop is a-okay there!

While the laptop never makes it into bed, falling asleep on the couch alongside the laptop is a very regular occurrence...

Since I don't have a TV, I view TV shows and movies on my laptop. I often watch in bed, taking breaks to surf the web for TV-show and movie-related dirt and to catch up on my blogs.

Do people really sleep with their laptops IN the bed with them? That seems like an unecessary attachment to being connected.

After spending the whole day sitting in front of a computer at work, I find that when I use the computer at night, it is just mindless surfing and I know I would be much better off reading, talking to my partner or sleeping!

I got rid of the TV in the bedroom and would love to have the computer out of there as well. Isn't the bedroom supposed to be a sanctuary?

Used to but not any more. Silly as it sounds I sleep much better if I'm not bombarded by media just before i drift off.

We have a no laptop rule in the bedroom. Mostly because I can't sleep with the clicky-clicky, but also because the bedroom is for sleep, and for spending time together. The laptop kills both.

oh lilith...

I've often often fallen asleep to the tv in bed and on the couch, I ALWAYS eat breakfast and only have coffee in the morning and NEVER drink soda. Also, I've "got it together" in general, and I think many many night owls do as well. Your putting 2 and 2 together was more like a weird connect the dots with many dots missing... such a strange comment on your part. It's like if I said that who rest in the dark with no music, no tv and no internet were those anal life-conqueror types who ate bran muffins for breakfast everyday and didn't give up their seats on transit for the elderly or pregnant.

I have no laptop and no tv in the bedroom, except for a few times when I was sick or so, when I took laptop in... I try to keep the bedroom as only sleep/sex/relaxation oriented, as that's what the researchers and doctors suggest, and that's what I found works indeed for me as well. I need a lot of sleep, and I want a good quality sleep... and it's good to go to a place than in my mind is connected to rest... I use laptop in my dining room or on recliner a lot though... and I fell asleep already with a laptop on my lap, while in a recliner ;-)

btw - to people who are worried about overheating - what I have is one of these "lap desks" with comfy pillow and even top, on which I put very light cooling pad (it connects to a laptop with usb). it's great, comfy and safe.
