Hello AT,
I could really use your help here.
I've been scouring the internet for a long time for a good desk and hutch such as the Graham desk/hutch at Pottery Barn.
The dimensions (about 50" wide) and storage capacities/functions are exactly what I'm looking for (drop down desk, lots of shelving), but I'm just not crazy about the style.
I'm looking for something a bit more mod, within the same general price range.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks! Janet

West Elm has a GREAT little hutch/desk product that tucks away neatly for $800.

Maybe also check out the Container Store's elfa product line? Rather than a single piece of furniture, you can create a great micro home-office system to perfectly fit our space and needs.http://www.containerstore.com/elfa/plan/solutions/officeSketch.jhtml

If I recall, Ligne Rosset has a beautiful mod one I thought PERFECT for myself until I saw the price tag. Maybe you're more flush than me, though (I recall it was about $2500)...

I have some desks with hutches listed on my blog here - http://pleasesirblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/not-your-ordinary-desk.html
They are from Home Decorators Collection - not all modern, but good prices. Good luck!

Janet, you didn't mention the price so we have no idea what price range you're looking for but I would suggest you look at ebay and narrow your search to NYC within a few miles of where you are. They have some pretty amazing desks.

Thanks for the suggestions. We're willing to spend about $1500. Elizabeth, just checked out Ligne Roset. They quoted the Hyannis Port at $3500 - ouch! DMartini, I just received a Home Decorators catalog - how's the quality? kimg, the West Elm one looks very promising! Thank you!!

What do folks think of the Crate and Barrel Studio desk?

I think you'll bang your kneeds and find it awfully uncomfortable to work in front of for any length of time. Better to get something that accomodates a chair and your body better.

Janet - I haven't bought anything from Home Decorators yet, but on the website it seems like most of the desks are made from solid wood and they say "will last a lifetime". The West Elm one looks nice too! Good luck!

I have been on a similar search and ended up with a customized version of this, from Room and Board:

You can add more shelves or file space...the site makes it very easy to try out different combinations.

I have the same problem - I've been looking for an armoire for a while. Most are too small and don't make use of the wall space, most don't enclose printers to keep them free of dust, or if they do these things well, then they're over $2500. And Elfa=ugly when you're in a small space and don't want to look at your office all the time.
One option I was thinking of was to get an antique Chinese armoire for around $1500 and get a cabinet guy to retrofit it for about $200. However, I don't like the idea of drilling into antiques and I would have to save money for that option, too!

I have something from ikea (i'm not sure if this is the exact same one)
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50059149
it also has a hutch/shelving unit thing with doors that goes on top to make a unit like the one you have pictured above - and there's space underneath for your chair/knees. We keep the computer under the desk and the printer on top (so they're not hidden) but it's pretty decent at hiding the monitor and all our files.

You could get something like that and add some cool fabric to the inside of it to make it more mod???

Janet, you know the other option I've been considering is to hire a kitchen cabinet contractor to do something custom. I have the height (don't know if you do, too, but the problem with all the other suggestions is that they're all too short) and cabinets will take up less of a footprint on the floor, being so shallow. I don't know! I have been obsessing about this for a while. AT posted a while back on a Martha Stewart idea where you take 3 bookcases, add molding and a framing track and put sliding doors on it. But then you'd have to install a fold down desk, too, and I'm not handy, but if you are, that might be a good option.

Joan, looks like we're totally on the same page. I have the height, so the more shelving, the better. Also it would be for the living room, so I'm not crazy about the Elfa options or too much exposed shelving. I'm not putting a computer on there, just mainly using it as a mail center and occassional writing. Saw some really nice desks on Lofgrens btw (with no hutch, of course). Not really handy, either, but maybe I'll just reach the point where I'm forced to be...
