Browsing the shelves of The Container Store, I happened upon this Wooden Lap Desk. While there are many similar products out there, this one struck me as better than the rest..
Wooden Lap Desk
The tray is made of solid wood in a few different finish choices and the pillow it rests on is bean-baggy, shaping well to your lap. I always find myself balancing my laptop precariously in my lap until it's practically scorching my legs. I've even read that such heat can cause impotence in males using laptop computers in this fashion too frequently. All fears aside, I still think this is a helpful object to have around the house for laptop work, dining, etc.!!

This is a great idea. I usually have one of the pillows from my sofa on my lap, to keep from scorching you-know-where.
I have been looking for something like that for a while - this is great.
Use a scrap piece of plywood and a pillow.
A splinter-y piece of plywood just wouldn't allow me to work comfortably. I think this is one of those items where DIY costs just as much if not more.
I'm glad you guys love lap desks. I make them, out of cherry and shredded foam, no Styrofoam. They so luxurious! 18" across, by 16" up and down, with 5 " of support. I'd love you to check them out at luxurylapdesk.com
