Best Products: Ikea Countertop With Vika Legs

4-3--ikea-table-2.jpgWe just built one for our office.

In the annals of great Ikea DIY products, this desk/table solution is one of our favorites, as well as one that is so clean that it can fit into a fancy home or a student's digs.

Take the Vika Inge legs by Olle Lundberg which will only run you $40 and, rather than fiberboard & laminate, skip over to the kitchen section and get the Pronomen solid wood countertops which will only run you about $49 and come in multiple lengths and widths. Then put the two together.

The desk/table that results is extremely sturdy, minimal in appearance, and customizable with paint or stain. Because you are using countertops the wood is very, very hard and you will have to pre-drill your holes, but it allows you to make a very long table or cut it down to fit any space.

That is so funny! When I was living in a rental a couple of years ago, I did this same thing to build a cheapo desk/work surface: the Vika Inge legs with one of the IKEA laminate counterops (the one that looks like grey terazzo). Very easy to put together, but boy was that sucker heavy! I ended up giving it to my painter when I moved out of the rental and into the current place.

Nice! I like!

But what I really want to know is the color of your floors.....I'm obsessed with the dark wood floors!!!

Very nice. I need a work table with casters. Does anyone know if any of the Ikea legs already come with casters attached? If not, can I easily add casters?

Where did you find the great red container that is living underneath the table?

Ingenious and beautiful. Of course, Maxwell, always.

Yes, what's that red storage item under the table?

Red rover, red rover! Send that storage on over! Where's that thing from?

The table/desk is a great idea! Thanks so much for posting it!

Are you guys talking about the ORANGE thing under the table? its from IKEA. I have one at my workstation...comes in green and grey as well i think. about $69

OK this is too funny. This is actually a project I thought of recently after eyeing some leftover IKEA countertop from a renovation. The difference is I plan on making my bar height.

My first reaction was "I hope that drill doesn't slip and hit Max's toes!"
My desk is a black IKEA top with black legs (sadly they don't make the legs anymore). I added IKEA casters and it was the best thing ever. Underneath that I slid a low wide black TV stand (Speigel sale item) that's perfect for holding the printer, scanner, computer speakers etc. I also put casters on that.
I'd prefer a L-shaped desk and when ready to switch, I can recycle my current desktop as a headboard by affixing it flush to the wall.

Now, I thought Ikea was carbs, and we were supposed to cut all that is Swedish out of our life?

Could it be that Ikea is stylish, cheap and easy, and practical, and those are not bad things?

HMMM.

I like your choices. I myself have an Ikea dining table as a desk (they don't sell it anymore, but it's about 500 lbs of solid beech, and I love it) and I also have the storage thing. Much nicer than any other portable-cart solution I've been able to find.

The storage unit is here:
http://tinyurl.com/b74jg

It's the Sonne Storage unit on casters for $69.99. They only have green and white on that site.

posted by Pixie on 2006-04-03 22:14:30

The real question is: are there any IKEA drawer units (perhaps from the kitchen section?) that can be attached to the underside as well?

hehe Ikea already sells this table with pre-drilled leg holes. It looks exactly like that though. The top isn't solid wood though, so if you can drill a hole I can see the countertop being preferable.

I've been planning on taking the matching nesting tables and tv bench and getting a friend to cut marble to fit on top of them. High + low = Awesome.

The legs with the fake top are only 59$ while the real wood all together will run you 89$. You get what you pay for.

Rita, the GALANT series has legs with casters:
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10103&storeId=12&langId=-1&categoryId=16137&cattype=sub&parentCats=15600*15874*16137&chapterId=16301

Pick an A-leg in dark grey steel or the lighter silvery steel, and pick a shape...any shape, there are a lot of shapes, for the table top. LOL!

Since the SONNE isn't in orange, and everyone thought it was red anyway, how about the HELMER drawer unit on casters:
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15600&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=43264&langId=-1&parentCats=15600*16146*16251

Another shapely item to slip under a desk is the ILEN side table/tv bench:
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15561&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=11144&langId=-1&parentCats=15561*15641*15962

Wire baskets on casters (but they don't show the casters on), ANTONIUS:
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15597&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=69009&langId=-1&parentCats=15597*15852*16150

It all comes separate, here's just the wire basket frame, showing the casters on:
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15597&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=11121&langId=-1&parentCats=15597*15852*16150*15669

You can add on drawers, or even a worktop to that unit, giving you extra space as needed.

I was just suggesting using the adjustable legs to someone else in one of the open threads, I think, and using solid surface kitchen countertops or Imagine Tile over the IKEA basic tabletop.

I love casters. I am obsessed with casters. I want casters on everything.

Personally, I like seeing the photos of Maxwell's toes. :)

if someone could supply me with an explanation, i would be very greatful. In the photo, that appears on my computer---There is nothing under the desk!!--- the only red in the photo is the chair. thanks ( it did seem people were seeing things i wasn't when looking at the apt. contest photos too)

w most of ikea's legs, you can attach casters - their casters which are not always in stock - but it raises the height of the table so that your chairs end up being a bit low. ideally you need shorter legs or legs that can be cut.

posted by asta on 2006-04-04 10:27:00

what height does it end up being, because it seems kind of low for a counter. i'm looking for a cheap solution for a terrible lack of counterspace in my kitchen and i'm wondering if that would work, if there are legs that are longer? i really like the countertop, though.

Asta- It might be easier to use a chair that can be adjusted up and down, rather than cutting the legs. Needless to say, my desk chair is on wheels too....wheeee!

Ali -
Methinx this would be considered a "good carb" kind of like certain beets or sweet potatoes, because of all the other vitamins it has.

Its functionality and economy of line, and good design might make it last pretty far into the future, and the versatility of always being able to re-attach those legs to something else, and to be able to update the stain color of the wood and/or paint it makes it kind of like tofu, right? So, that has a fair degree of protein even though it's not necessarily made of cow.

Thanks for the info Andree and Asta. I hate going to Ikea because it is always so crowded when I go but now that I know they have what I need I will brave the crowds.
The table will most be used for drying things that have been glued or dyed so the height isn't too important but the ability to move it around is key.

posted by Rita on 2006-04-04 15:15:19

Do those IKEA table legs come with the circular disks used to attach them to the table?

posted by Michael in CO on 2006-04-04 18:39:19

Rita, the keywords to hitting IKEA are "weekdays" and "mornings"...forget about ever going on weekends. It's always over-crowded. I darn near had the whole place to myself on a weekday morning (insert cricket sounds here). Even weekday afternoons aren't so bad.

Michael, the legs would come with whatever is needed to attach them to their table base. Although they have a lot of things that come individually, and it can be hard to figure out what comes with what...so in that case, CALL THEM,
Personal Service
Monday-Saturday: 8:00 AM - 12:00 midnight EST
Sunday: 9:00 AM - 12 midnight EST
Phone

They can tell you what exactly it comes with, I think. Nothing worse than getting home and finding you don't have the critical part. LOL!

posted by Andree on 2006-04-04 19:14:49

I wish I could go on a weekday. Unfortunately due to my job I can only go on weekends. Taking a personal day to go to Ikea seems like a waste of a personal day.

I've paired the same legs with another top from Ikea: rounded aluminum edges and a frosted glass top. Very sharp and synchs pefectly with Apple's industrial design.

posted by ModernSF on 2006-04-04 22:49:52

hehe Yep, that's me.

I love that little U-shaped tv bench on wheels. I wish they had designed it so you could push three of them together to make a coffee table.

posted by lindenen on 2006-04-04 23:02:38

Lindenen (you already sound like an IKEA line of products), the U-shaped tv bench is on wheels. You can push three of them together. As they are on wheels and you can defeat gravity in your own home. Push them together anyway you want. So the open parts face each other and hide your stuff. So the open parts face out. Same direction, or different direction. I'm pretty sure they won't have some magnetic force field that will push themselves apart while you sleep.

It's not what it's called, it's what you can do with it. Better still are those flea market and thrift store finds that I have NO IDEA what it was supposed to be originally, but I come up with something else to do with it.

Here's a version of Ikea's legs paired with their aluminum-and-glass table top, supporting an Apple Macintosh workstation:

What chair was that with your Aluminum desk?

posted by Robert Nicholson on 2006-05-13 23:56:11

The chair you see in my photos of an all-aluminum work space is Emeco's classic 1006 Navy Side Chair. I recently found my well-worn chair up on Craig's List for $100, a significant savings over the $370 new price.

very nice. I did this with an 8ft. kitchen counter top with the maple edging. I used 5 of the vika legs, 4 corners and one in the middle of the back. It turned out very slick.
