Fletcher Capstan Tables

Expandable tables are pretty common, right? But what about radially expanding tables - ones that expand from small round tables into large round tables? Now, that's something different. And the ones at db Fletcher Furniture Design are beautiful, handcrafted works.

They're nautical tables so they are able to stand up to very harsh environments. The cost surely matches this custom precision crafting and high finish quality. We love the intricate way the table can expand and contract. Don't miss the video on the website. (thanks for the tipoff, Rob!) -regina

Saw those on gizmodo.com yesterday, sent to my dad and he flipped over them. But then...there is the price. $95,000. Yes that's right!

Saw one of these (or what looked like an antique one, which I'm sure is no probable) in the ABC carpet and home warehouse in the Bronx not too long ago. After staring at it for a little while we finally figured out how it opened and were just blown away. It is as amazing in person as you'd expect. The leaves are equally impressive, they stood on their own rack next to the table.

Great great table.

Also saw the ones at ABC Carpet and Home (some have freestanding leaves, others have leaves that pop up from within the table.

The prices were around $9,000-15,000, depending on the size and model.

Extremely cool stuff.

We have a round table that expands into a rounded cornered triangular table for 6-7 people. The extra leaves are store in the cylindrical base that holds the table up. It's by Skovby a Danish company. It's my husband's favorite conversation piece. I'm in LA, but we purchased it at Plummers in West Los Angeles. Here's a link to their site. http://www.skovby.com/index_uk.html

AHHHHH....Enough!!!! If I see this thing on another design blog I'm going to scream. Even my boyfriend, who cares zero about design, said yesterday, "what's with that ugly expanding table everyone is putting on their blogs?" Yikes. ENough.

This is the first time I've seen this and I think it's fantastic design. Very clever, and extremely simple to use, apparently. The video shows how easily one person can convert it from a six-top to a twelve-top. And here, I thought my dining room table with its integrated butterfly leaf was cool!

I agree with Monica. This is definitely one of a kind and really does stand out if you wanted to impress your guests!

I also saw the same type of expanding circular tables at ABC Carpet and Home two weeks ago at their store in Delray Beach, Fl, and yes they are dramatically less than $95,000.

This type of table has been on the market in various forms for at least 10 years, only it has had to be purchased through an interior designer via manufacturer's showroom. I believe Grange and Henkel-Harris manufacture similar tables. In addition, there is a competing design where by turning a crank, semi-circular trapezoid shaped panels pop out from underneath the table, forming a 12-15 inch wide outer ring to expand the diameter.
