NY Good Questions: Will This Console Table Work In My Hallway?

5.30table.jpgDear AT,

I am planning to buy a new console table for my hallway, and I hope you or AT Readers can help me with my choice.

I absolutely love this one, the Shangai model I am sending you, but the problem is that maybe it is a little bigger than it should be for that space.

The hallway is 1.05 m. wide, and the console is 45 cm wide so I would have 55 cm left to pass through.

What do you think?...

I am also sending you a floor plan of my hallway to help you get a picture of what I am talking about.

The small console on the plan is the one I have currently; the dotted line you can see around it is the size of the new console, the Shangai.

I would really appreciate your opinions or tips.

If you say that one is too big, what measurements would you recommend me?

Thanks! Pablo

Much too wide - what you have existing is already a pinch

My question to you would be - how large are the people / objects that will need to get past? This table would only leave about 20 inches clearance which is quite narrow by anyone's standards, but if you're regularly going to have to squeeze past it will quickly become very inconvenient indeed.

Do you absolutely need to have a console table?

I think it is out of proportion to the width of the hallway. Even if you can scoot by, I would worry that it's too wide.

It's definately too wide, and offers no storage.

For a 42" wide corridor, I wouldn't put in anything more than 12" deep.

I think it's too big, and I wouldn't go with anything that juts out further than your current table.

I need more room than that to manoeuvre around furniture, but that's just me. It's a gorgeous piece you've picked out, but maybe "try out" whether or not it works for that space by taping out the dimensions on the floor. If you find yourself "going over the tape" too much, then the piece is too big for you.

I think it is much too big. Move your current console out to same depth and try it out for awhile to see if you could live with it.

Yes, too wide. I'd vote against a console table in the first place, your hallway is just too narrow. How about some art on your walls to dress the space up?

Too big. What about a wall mounted shelf to act as a landing strip.

I wouldn't go any wider than 10-11"

Hi! Well, firstly, thanks all for your tips!
By the way, in case you want to see a bigger image for the plan, here is a link: http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x273/bloobrey/Hallway.jpg

TallulahBelle, people who has got to get past it are not very large, but anyway, as everyone has said, I think it will be definitely very large for that space. Well, I don't think I need to have a console table, but I'd like having one because I have some photos, flowers and a lamp currently there. Nevertheless, I have read some other tips here that would work well, too.

bepsf, I had thought about something without storage because it looks "softer" or "lighter" in a small space, doesn't it? Thanks a lot for the tip on the measurements of the console, I totally agree with you with the 12''.

Darcidoodle, that's what I had done to discover it might be too wide. I had almost bought the console, but then I came back home, tried that out and realised about the actual measurements.

Enamorada, that idea was absolutely great, I hadn't thought about it before. I did it and everything seemed just a little bit overwhelming. That helped me a lot.

f.in.eur., that's really a good idea as well, I'm really taking it into account. The only problem I see is: if art/paintings are very different among them, wouldn't the space look untidy? Maybe the same type of frame for every art I hang would work. Thank you very much for the good idea.

RichardinLA, I had already thought about that, but I don't really like that kind of furniture, I usually like classic furnishings.

Thanks everyone again. I have had a new idea: what would you think of a really BIG mirror from floor to top? Well, not so tall, but a quite tall one, framed or something.
Now, if you had to choose a new console (12'' or narrower), what models would you choose between? I'd like you to show me some online pieces for inspiration. Although I don't live in the States, I guess I could find something similar around here.

Do you own? If so, then consider having a carpenter remove some drywall to make a niche. Put in a wood tabletop that extends 10-15 cm outside the niche, and paint "legs" that match your console table.
