Here's an interesting prototype design from Bern, Switzerland-based designer Nicola Enrico Stäubli — the Trestle Table is made up of four "legs" and tough nylon lashing straps that hold a tabletop of your choice...

The versatile and customizable design allows the tabletop to be a variety of sizes and shapes (though the thickness of the table must be between 24mm and 30mm). The metal legs are powder-coated steel.

This is an interesting concept for those who don't always want a large table or desk — but would gladly store the legs and lashing straps for the occasional dinner party. See more designs from Nicola Enrico Stäubli at his site, Nicola From Bern.
