EATware: Decomposable Tableware

6-18-eatware-logo.jpgGreen Picnic. Environment Appropriate Tableware — EATware is a nifty way to green-ify outdoor dining and supermarket packaging. Made of 100% natural fibers from bamboo, sugar cane pulp, starch and water, EATware has an extensive line of products — trays, plates, serving ware and bowls. Suitable for even wet and oily foods, the products decompose in soil in just 180 days but are microwave, freezer and steamer safe to 284 degrees Fahrenheit (140 degrees Celsius)...

We're going to keep our eyes out for EATware as it is a huge step in the right direction.

Via inhabitat, where the rumor is the EATware products are available at some Whole Foods stores.

These are great products. There is also disposable cutlery made of potato starch as well as disposable tableware made of bamboo. I don't know about the energy and water resources used in manufacturing these items, but they almost have to be more environmentally friendly than similar items made of non-renewable and non-biodegradeable resources incarnated in plastic and styrofoam.

Plus, they look nice!

You know, in Italy the Agip Gas stations/Rest stop food places use ceramic dishes. You sit at a table to eat your food. If we could just make this idea cool...

My local Whole Foods is using something similar at the salad bar. The containers are made from bulrush fiber, and are compostable, microwavable, etc.

That's really cool. Most of the time we use ceramic dishes, but for camping, picnics and take out this is ideal. That's awesome that it's mircowavable. I wish my local deli had this.

There is also www.worldcentric.org, they are in Palo Alto CA and do the same types of products including corn cutlery and cups. I've used them that my daughters school events and the kids think its fantastic to compost.

Oh, hurray, it has passed the stringent "Green/Not Green" barometer of MrGreen. I can sleep at night!
