Lego Coasters + Barware

I'm a LEGO maniac. I was excited to see LEGO branching off into some housewares to appeal to die-hard fans. LEGO coasters and barware and even an ice cube tray. Of course, true fans make their own coasters...

Did you guys here that they're moving lego production from the United States to Mexico? Evidently the move is going a lot fast than originally planned because they made it so easy to take apart and put back together!

I've never understood adult lego fascination.

The coasters and barware are silly, but those ice cube trays are pretty cool. Count me in.

Pixie,

For many of us it harkens back to one of our favorite and most creative childhood toys. You could easily build ANYTHING, giving you your own three dimensional world that was all yours. That's a big deal when you're a kid... Or at least, it was for me.

yes!
count me in - those ice cubes are great - i wonder if they have the little round headed people ones too - great gag to add some yellow food coloring and float those in a fruity drink.

pixie - how old are you - my little sister can't understand the fascination either and i think it is because we didnt have other manifestations of our fantasy world when we grew up but she did - nintendo etc.

i had an atari and two games - pong and pole position.

legos was much more fun.
kind of like design - you feel like you can make anything out of anything, or some more profound way to say that

I'm very, very (very) pre-nintendo. Legos were around when I was a kid (according to wikipedia), but I don't remember really ever getting into them or with my generation being fascinated by them. I think the cohort fascination with them came later and I'm wondering when that started. In Douglas Coupland's book Microserfs, the programmers are all fascinated with Legos. Did Legos get huge in the early 80's maybe?

When I was growing up, a long, long time ago, Lego was a guy thing. Not to presume what sex you are, Pixie. ;)! I like the coasters, but if they have a logo on them, I won't buy them.

My mom has been giving me Lego gifts for 49 years, so I fully expect to see one of these under the tree this Christmas!!!

legos were really popular in the 80's ( as a child of the 80s i would know ) - they were my favorite toy and all i would ever play with or get as gifts. They really influenced me as I'm now an architect! Pixie, you can see how strongly people feel about them and these witty bar accessories are just a great way to showcase your personality.

OMG - I want the ice cube tray!

I was born in '72. Both Legos and Tinker Toys were my favorites. I still think Legos are the ideal toy because they foster creativity - and a sense of design - at an early age. I ended up as an engineer.

Fran, Legos were my brother's and my favorite toys growing up too and he wound up in engineering school and after several years on an engineering track I wound up a designer :)

I loved them - still do. So much creativity. My brother had thousands and we'd build humongous Lego structures all day. So much fun. It was my first lesson in working with modules.

Saw first LEGO set in Hudson, NY in late 1961. Pricey, but so perfect for Frank. Created many a masterpiece myself after his bedtime!

Legos have been around a lot longer than the 1980s and were much cooler before then. The 1980s is when Lego went to making playsets to build very specific things (with movie tie-ins, I think), which may have boosted their popularity. But the Legos of the late 1960s and early 1970s came in big mixed sets that didn't have as many fancy parts, but also didn't dictate what you could build with them to the same degree as later sets.

I had two LARGE sets of general pieces and loved them. For a while in late childhood, I mostly built studio apartments with my Legos.

I love LEGO! It's the perfect toy and yes, its gained popularity with movie tie-ins but once the Star Wars V Wing Fighter is complete my 9 year old will take it apart and create something just as complex and interesting. Must see lego videos "The Mollusk" by Ween and "Fell in Love with a Girl" by the White Stripes. Just don't step on a piece in your bare feet!

That ice cube tray is cool, I think I will get it as part of someone's Christmas gift.

So cool to have Frank's mom post too.

Mom of Frank,
Thanks for sharing your LEGO memories. : )

I absolutely have adored Lego since I was a very young kid. And while I don't have any left, they carry very happy memories for me, and I think that all of these things are just delightfully cheesy and whimsical ways to relive a piece of your youth. A small, plastic (or ice) interlockable piece. :)
