New York Delft Tableware by Lovegrove & Repucci

06.01.plate3.jpg

Pretty cool. This New York-themed tableware by Lovegrove & Repucci is printed with taxis, garbage trucks, kiosks, and graffiti. We like how it's themed but tasteful: no souvenir shop looks here. Check out more great photos after the jump.

It's funny, but although I think they basically look pretty nice in a way, and kinda sorta clever, I rode on one too many subway cars in the late-1980's that were graffittied to the hilt, so that the look of that graphic style still makes me a little queasy. Can't quite enjoy this. Holy crap; I'm getting middle-aged.

Oddly, "souvenir shop" was exactly what I was thinking...

That china just has the feel of something that seems incredibly witty when encountered in a clever little Chelsea or UWS shop on a trip to NYC, possibly after lunch at a little place with a patio where a passing tourist asked you for directions (you feel like such a New Yorker!). But then when you get it back to wherever you're from, by the third time it comes out for dinner, your friends have stopped chuckling and started muttering about great bargains on plain white restaurant china, not to mention the most incredible sale on Villeroy and Bosch if you wait another month and know the secret password.

Maybe just do luncheon plates mixed in with more normal Delft?

I would like a piece with the garbage trucks motif as a gift for my brother-in-law, who's in waste management.

I think Wende is right on the money! It elicited a chuckle, but come to think of it, I couldn't really imagine eating dinner off of the image of a garbage truck. Cute, but not much long-term potential.
