apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Dyson Root 6 in the Test Lab

10-12-dyson.jpg
Product: Dyson Root 6 Handheld Designer: Dyson Price: $150

We had to have it. There was some excitement in the comments of a recent H+H Roundup that announced the Root 6 Handheld. At that time, "the only handheld that doesn't lose suction" was only available direct from Dyson. With a little research we knew Target would stock them in November...

We made a special trip when a friend told us it was on the shelves! Initially, we were worried about the 6-minute limit on charges, but the apartment is so small it only takes about 4 minutes to hit all the trouble spots.

Pros

  • Size: Intial images reminded us of gigantic leaf blowers. In reality, it was so small in the box that we almost missed it on the bottom shelf at Target.
  • Strong: It is so more advanced than a dustbuster.
  • It's Oh-so Quiet! Kind of hums.
  • It doesn't lose suction: it is full-power or no power...none of that slowly dying...

Cons

  • Clunky-looking
  • Clear Dustbin=gross!
  • It's Ugly: Where to hide it while it's charging?
  • Trigger: Easy to push really hardbut care instructions warn against this.
  • and finally, it still scares the dog.

People love or hate Dyson. Check out Dyson Ball in the Test Lab. Anyone else have experience with the Root 6? aaron

This has to be the worst case of industrial design ever. Send the Dyson design team back to art school.

It would look great in a Lana Turner hair. And a top hat.

It reminds me of one of the creatures in the bar in the first Star Wars movie...

It is a very clunky design; looks like it would be very awkward and uncomfortable to use (not to mention inefficient). I'd like to hear another review after you've owned it awhile and used it a lot.

Trigger - "easy to push really hard?" Meaning that one might inadvertently exert enough presure to break it?

The 6 minute thing is no biggie - I'm sure it was meant for isolated mishaps. A bigger-than-6-minute-to-clean mess probably needs more than a quick vac. anyway.

This may be my only way to afford a Dyson...looking forward to more posts regarding this product.

I feel like Dyson is the the Hummer of vacuum cleaners. I personally don't want my cleaning instrument to look like something used as a prop from GhostBusters or Predator.

read this Target product description.. "streamlined!"..

"• Lightweight design has a streamlined look and easy-empty canister"

Given my crappy experience with other brand hand-helds I remain excited about this Dyson. I am glad Aaron's review is positive. It does look *huge* and that was a concern for me as well but also glad to learn that in person the product is smaller than expected. It is clunky-looking but I'll take clunky-but-effective. (By the way, that's how my husband describes himself.)

I bought one a month ago and I have no problem with how the vac works, but six minutes operation for 3 hours of charge is ridiculous. It would have been great if they included an A/C adapter so it could powered in the car at least.

The looks don't bother me, and I can't think of any vac that actually looks good.

I agree, if it works great I would be thrilled. It would be great for vaccuuming drapes and woodwork. I don't keep my vaccuums and brooms in a glass display case anyway.

johnny k,
this was featured on the rachael ray show today-- i just had to find it:

http://www.retromodern.com/item_detail.asp?8619.

it looks like a blob of liquid metal! but does it work as well as a dyson? (it is cheaper by a little bit)

I had to pick one of these up today. For anyone thinking about it, you can get them on Amazon for $149 and there is currently a $25 off coupon for housewares purchases over $125 (and free shipping).

I can't wait to ditch my old dust buster that can barely suck up a crumb. I actually want to get two of these and hang them from Sam Brown belts like a pair of .45s.

sucks ping pong balls, yet it didnt fill the lottery chamber...of golf course, its all clear now.

dyson should focus on sucking sewage.

posted by ion on 2006-11-21 00:13:23

dyson, take a swing, you suck...
sorry, i need to wash chunky food dishes and let gravity suck my personal digested waste?

hint:
if you suck like you claim, then blow.

Given the meaning of 'root' in Australia, I was wondering what this device was actually for.
I am greatly relieved to discover it is some kind of vacuum cleaner. It must be assumed the use of 'suck' and 'blow' are similarly not what I initially thought.

They may need to change the name if marketing here.

It has been a year since I bought this vaccuum and don't regret it. It is not pretty, but it does its job very well and is easy to empty, too. I still recommend it!

If the clear dust bin turns anyone off I am sure it would be easy enough to apply a decal or frosted mylar to the canister :)

I bought this along with the Slim model but I immediately returned it unopened (Target).

I think it's probably great if you have a good-sized home, but for my loft, the Dyson Slim is just right for regular cleaning and quick pick ups.

I do love my Slim to death.

My brother has this vac and loves it but with one exception....he says the battery runs out very quickly with continual use but the trigger on/off helps with that.

I bought one at Target 6-8 months ago...while i do love it, the short battery life is more of an issue that you'd think…forget trying to get the dust bunnies up flight of stairs or even cleaning out the cushions on a large sofa. The "leaf-blower-esque" design does manage to get my ever-manly husband into vacuum though…if only for six minutes.

For a (MUCH) cheaper alternative, the mini-shop vac we were given as a wedding present (also from target) dominates the dyson in terms of suction power. I had my local vacuum shop lengthen the mini shop vac’s cord (about $15) and it is great for our whole apartment…no battery life to worry about. Also stores neatly on wall mounted bracket included with it. Yes, it is ugly, but easy to hide.

Also....keep the dyson away from plastic bags! My first one got caught on a dry cleaning bag in the bottom of my closet and the motor burned up instantly!

This is the part where I start yellin' "function over form". When it comes to vacuums or the like...give me function over form anyday.

I love my Dyson vacuum cleaner. That said, the new Dyson hand dryers don't work very well (imho).

has anyone seen the commercial where that guy says something along the lines of when Dyson has to build an ugly machine that works well, it will? I think they finally did. This thing is u-g-l-y.

If the sight of the debris in the clear dust bin grosses you out, you're not cleaning often enough.

Mine's been working fine for me for 10 months now. Battery life is annoying as I purchased it to accompany my Roomba. You get by just gotta clean quickly in those 6 minutes.

you have a dog?

that's great you like it it's not as big as i'm expecting.
i'm having a giveaway for 3 of them on my blog, but i haven't seen one in person. i'm glad to hear it's quiet strong.

We love ours. We've had it for about 6 months now and probably use it for something every 2-3 days.

It is great for getting cat hair off of upolstered furniture and picking up the occasional small mess. We don't use it as our primary method of deep cleaning. It works really well for our application.

LOVE MY DYSON (S). I'm a vacuuming addict, but with two babies under two, we have both the slim and the handheld (it's possible to get decent deals on ebay sometimes). I'd recommend them both, they do exactly what they say they will, though I don't really care if my vacuum's attractive I have to say.

I have had it for close to a year now and absolutley love it! I have 2 dogs and it is great for getting fur off the couch or the bed. I use it daily and honestly, six minutes is more than enough for getting the couch, bed, lampshades, any spills etc. I couldn't recommend it strongly enough!

That shop vac may be ugly but the dyson is way uglier. I can't bear to look at it. For vacuuming function over form you may want to HEPA-fi, I mean a real HEPA not the psuedo brands.

i love it! i make sure i use it for the full six minutes - running around to find things to vacuum. it's like a kiddie version of a toy gun for me. *zoom*

I've had one for a year or more and it's pretty good. The "easy to empty dustbin" has, however, become less and less easy to open. I can no longer just flick the red switch and have it pop open, I have to assist it with a yank on the bottom of the bin. It gets a little messy sometimes. Overall, though, better than any dustbuster I've ever had.

I'm a fan of the Root 6. So much so that it made me go out and buy a Dyson Slim. Herein lies the problem - it does not hold last long enough :(

While working however, it works quite well.
