Mosaic Wave

Introducing Aviva Slesin, who first caught our attention when she shared with us the painting below. It is the first completed in a new series of disaster transformations; this one of the hurricaine-ravaged Louisiana...

Louisiana, 11 x 14.

Taking compositional cues from aerial photographs she finds in the newspaper, Aviva transforms vast landscapes of destruction and sorrow into watercolor and gouache beauties of intimate scale.

Aerial views and cities have been of interest for a while – below are three views that form a triptych.

The spontaneous quality of the watercolor paint itself also inspires these colorful, intuitive and joyful paintings.

Aviva is best known for her documentary film work (she won an Academy Award for “Ten Year Lunch: The Wit and Legend of the Algonquin Round Table” and has made films about Twyla Tharp and the National Gallery, among other things). Last year she took a leave of absence from filmmaking to strike out into new territory, and began painting. We’re very glad you did Aviva!

Beautiful, powerful images - there's something sad but natural about it even before you know the inspiration.

I looked again. I still love these. I wish we could keep posts less personal. We like it or don't. That's the nature of all things art. "WTF!!!..." seems unnecessary and disrespectful to the artist. IMHO....of course.

Fantastic use of color and imagination. I'm blown away by the raw power of this work. Thanks for sharing it with the world.

How stunning your latest work; amazing growth from your first flowers! You deserve another Academy Award in the Art Direction catagory. Tell Lorenzo to buy me one...

Beautiful reproductions, as I've seen the real thing. They are like jewels. Didn't John Huston paint?

Tonight I was speaking about Aviva's fine documentaries to a friend. I went online to share her bio and came across her paintings. I found them beautiful. I really want to see them in person. I get to New York fairly frequently.
Please let me know where they can be seen.
Aviva, congratulations on another success.
