Introducing Dirk Westphal, putting the fun back in shark sightings.

Here we’ve got the shark as lonely hunter… and also perhaps as just another dude on vacation, checking out the scenery and looking to meet people.

The different contexts produces a satisfying range of tensions for viewers to enjoy – from head-scratching double-takes to abject terror. These are photographs, often taken OF the artist swimming with his sharkfin head-gear – and sometimes taken by the artist of a friend playing the part of the fin. I think they are beautiful, and a howl.

Sorta has me wondering if this runs the risk of a beach police citation for terrorizing the people?

Recently he’s also learned to shape his own surfboards, embellishing them with images from his earlier series of fish photography (ornamental fresh water and salt-water fish too - see below).

The fish photos are mounted between UV-Plexiglas and Sintra with a wood brace. Some are also available as a mounted 40 x 50 c-print. Prices start at $1200 for the sharks and go up to $3600 for the larger fish photos, and are about 6 –7,000 for surfboards and the long backlit photos. Many editions are almost sold out. So hustle if you love one. The site allows you to make purchases easily on line.

Westphal is represented by Mixed Greens Inquiries? Please contact the nice folks at Mixed Greens directly or the artist by email.
