Hive, 2003. Paint Chips and wire mesh

Introducing Elizabeth Duffy; artist as deft re-purposer, with a meditative touch.

Have you ever hesitated before tossing those beautiful paint chip strips --the colors that went un-chosen in your paint decisions? Ever found yourself delighted by the stickers and labels aisle at Staples or look twice at a colorful dish scrubber? Wondering… what could I do with this? What could this become? I must confess, I have, and merrily for me, I discovered that this too is the territory of Ms. Duffy’s art.

You can see more of these drawings in the White Columns curated slide registry.

I'm a bit fond of the envelope drawings. These are made on the inside of envelopes, using the existing data protection patterning as a point of departure.

In the artist's words, “I make objects and drawings that seek to evoke wonder and a sense of the unexpected through the process of transformation. I have always lived in urban settings and my neighborhood has been my art store. In the dollar stores, hardware stores and stationery stores of Brooklyn I have found ways to create my own experience of nature. There is a compulsive aspect to this, a process of repetition that has a sense of quietude and aloneness and that relates to domestic work, to the crafts that I did as a child.”
