Beatrice, 2006. Woodcut with goauche painting, 27 1/2 x 19 1/2
Introducing Karla Roberts and her Venetian beauties.
This print series brings together boat names and the faces of irons found during a residency in Venice. I'm stumped as to which I'd choose for my home; they each have such distinct personalities. So, thought I'd try a little beauty contest... (see all the contestants below)
Carolina, 2006. Woodcut with goauche painting, 27 1/2 x 19 1/2
Darla, 2006. Woodcut with goauche painting, 27 1/2 x 19 1/2
In the artist's words, "This print series came about as a response to the Venetian landscape. Each woodcut is of a different iron face that I cut to be larger than life, and the graphic images are intended to double as boat silhouettes. The irons and the names were found in Venice. Both the name and unique typestyle are drawn from real boats found there. The iron is woodcut and the name below is painted in gouache."
Elena, 2006. Woodcut with goauche painting, 27 1/2 x 19 1/2
Francesca, 2006. Woodcut with goauche painting, 27 1/2 x 19 1/2
Marla, 2006. Woodcut with goauche painting, 27 1/2 x 19 1/2

I love that these are all prints of irons. Personally, I'd prefer to see these as a single large print in a chart-format. (But I'm a nerd that way.)

I had to vote Francesca: some boats, irons, and people are just solidly pedestrian

I voted Beatrice. For one, I love the name - it means voyager. For another thing, it's iron-face is fabulous. And lastly, it's font does not offend me. Heh. I almost voted Darla, though - she's an entirely different mood, isn't she?

I voted Darla, but then I've been watching some old Buffy.

Mara looks like an open shark's mouth as it chomps down on you!

alisong, Carolina looks a bit like that too....
I favor Beatrice. Aside from an affinity for the name, I like both the font and the iron design. I like that the iron shape is opened up toward the top, it's more exciting than the others.

Francesca...she obviously has some stories to tell despite her diminutive facade.

Elena - because it's my daughter's name.
But i do draw the line somewhere - I'm not buying a $600 print of an iron because it has her name on it...What a strange idea for a print!
