Introducing Mark LaRiviere

I could let my eyes rest on these paintings for a long time. They are so peaceful and suffused with light. And there is a peaceful balance between the natural landscape and the human intrusions of buildings and roads...

These gouache studies float on the paper, with a deep border (so the dimensions denote the size of the paper, which is larger than the image).

In the artist's words, "My work derives from my love of painting, a love of light, form, and nature; a love of the silvery light of the Venetians, Veronese and Titian, and of the French masters, Delacroix, Renoir and Cézanne."

His abiding interests in light and form are present in his earlier abstract works as well. This one below is from a series, all suggesting figures in groupings, in relationships. To see more of these, click here.
