Introducing Michael Arike.

I do a lot of driving around the 5 boroughs and see many interesting neighborhoods and views of our fine city – and no one has managed to capture my favorite views like Micheal Arike. Or maybe, on second thought, it’s her manner of presenting familiar views to me that has transformed them into favorite views.

Their stillness, light, texture and atmosphere bring to mind both Giorgio de Chirico and Edward Hopper.

These are created using a complex, multi-plate, aquatint etching method. Each print has been run through the press many times, each layer of color building up a richness and luminosity difficult to achieve in other media.

In the artist’s words, “My work is about my reaction to light and the effect it has on color. Common places and things take on a richer meaning when taken out of context and etched into a plate. The process seems to elevate the image and give it nobility and permanence."

A friend spied these aquatint etchings at an exhibition of artists currently up at University Place, between 3rd and 12th Streets, running through June 4th. “I think her etchings are really something. Not too much detail, and unexpected perspectives with lots of shadows and plays on light. She was lovely to talk with, too.”

Her booth is just south of 9th St, on the east side of University Place. Noon - 8PM.

Prices for these limited edition prints run from about $150 for small ones, to $375 for larger ones. Please see the artist’s website for a complete list of prints available and prices, or email her directly.

*I hear that many new works (not on the website or pictured here) are available at her booth this weekend, including smaller ones for even MORE reasonable prices...might want to go see for yourself!

Thanks Marcelle!

Her work is also carried by The Olde Print Shop on Lexington (around 30th). I saw it there about 3 months ago and was totally blown away. Love it.
