Rotunda Installation Project Musee D’Art Roger Quilliot, Clermont-Ferrand

Introducing Pierre Mabille, an artist obsessed with one elemental shape.

Over time this artist has ”simplified and purified” his visual vocabulary, reducing images to signs and symbols, and finally coming to rest on this one visual symbol, a pointy-ended oval.

His work explores this shape – as well as looks for this shape in the world around us. On the artist’s website, you will be treated to numerous photographs of this shape found in all sorts of surprising places. What does it remind you of?

It reminds me of those bones in the spine, the name of which escapes me now.

Also it reminds me of an abacus, and some of his images are reminds me of aquatic life, and in some of those images, the medieval symbol of a fish that Christians surreptitiously put on the doorways of the places where they would meet so that only each other knew that they were to meet there.
