Maidenhair Fern, 5x6", kallitype, $128

Introducing Rinne Allen a photographer who draws with the sun.

I came across Rinne's work when I dropped in to see what the wonderful folks at hable construction (at 117 perry street, nyc) were making with their printed fabrics this season.

Selliginella, 8x10", cyanotype, $168

These have all been made using a "pre-camera-era" photographic process that involves treating watercolor paper with light-sensitive pigments, laying a specimen on the treated paper and then exposing it to the sunshine until a 'ghost' image is revealed.

Two Allium, 8x10", kallitype, private collection

The blue ones are cyanotypes, and the deep brown and gray ones are closer to a kalliptype. I love how this process allows her to brush the light-sensitive emulsion onto the paper creating its own shape with soft, brush-stroke edges. Each light-drawing is unique, and all all have been created with the sunshine in her backyard garden in Athens, Georgia.

Wood Fern, 9x12", kallitype, $188

She has made prints/drawings as small as 2x3" and as large as 2'x3' -- and is angling on trying some as large as 6 ft tall soon. For that endeavor, I send her wishes for a brilliant sunny day -- no clouds, no wind! Prices range from $58-$975 (on up) -- options for almost any art budget.

These look like typical "lay some leaves on the paper" examples done by a student for the obligatory photogram / cyanotype assignment for a photo / art class.

Not sure who should be more embarrassed - the individual who cranked these out or the author for being so naive.

Hint: Want to save some money? Go to your local school / university when the photo department is having some sort of annual print sale and you can pick up prints exactly like these (or, actually you will probably be able to find better ones) for anywhere from $5 - $40.

If you're going to get random student art, you at least shouldn't get ripped off. And you will be supporting students who aren't misrepresenting a common classroom photogram assignment as "drawing with the sun." Flakey, baby, flakey!
