Introducing Suzi Matthews, a collage artist with a passion for numbers.
I dropped by my favorite shop, TAUK, in Montauk this past weekend and these collages were the first thing to catch my eye. TAUK is host to many an eye-catching object: beautiful books, natural forms like sea shells and driftwood, ceramics, glass, frames and super cool clothing too. Everything about the place is fresh, unusual and of impeccable taste. A great place for AT-readers to nose around; and a beautiful setting for these collages.

Every little piece in these collages is a clipping of a printed number. I started to wonder what the books in the artist’s house looked like – did they have page numbers any longer? Turns out her source material can run from the impersonal -- magazines, catalogues and junk mail -- to the more personal, clipping from her family-business catalogues of electronic-components (guitar effect pedals and vacuum tubes for high-end stereo systems, in case you are wondering).

She did her first number collage about 5 years ago, and hasn’t exhausted the topic yet. I love the range of patterns she can achieve with these numerical units. In the artist’s words: “Each work grows without a predetermined plan, and evolves organically, almost as if it tells me where it would like me to take it.”

Some are modular, and can be combined to make a larger work of art.

Stop by TAUK and see these -- the experiences of viewing them close-up and far away are quite different and I think important to enjoying the work. They will be on display until Sept 28. TAUK is located at 54 South Erie Avenue in Montauk, NY (right off the traffic circle at the center of town) 631-668-3686.
Prices range from $250 to $2200 – so there is Suzi Matthews gem for every pocketbook. Speaking of pocketbooks, she will be showing some of her work later this month, from Sept 29 to Oct 8 at the Pocketbook Factory in Hudson, NY.

I just love Suzi's work. It's thought provoking and gorgeous. Perfect to round out any vaguely hip apartment. That's why she's becoming so collectable.
I am familiar with Suzi Matthews' work, and I have to say, it really is outstanding. I never tire of her creative style.
I really dig the Gallery feature at AT. When do we get one out here in San Francisco?
a few thoughts...
the art reminds me of penny gumball machines... i want to eat the 'green and white O'(top right) in the 3x3 untitled image.
i alone will feed it pennies until i am herstorically remove by my hysterical 'take the child, shop, cook the meal mother.
i still want to eat art.
#8 especially stunning.....
These are gorgeous! Thanks for posting them. I am definitely going to start saving to buy a Suzi Matthews for my newlywed apartment.
Suzi is really creative and her art is beautiful... there is a peace to the chaos....my kind of Dark!
