FOOD: Summer Reading Survey

05.8.1 beach reading.JPGFood Porn. August is here. Time to head to the beach, the lake, mom and dad's house or spread out on the stoop with a glass of lemonade and a good magazine.

For those of us who cook, and who find food magazines even more tempting than getting lost in a New Yorker, or casually thumbing through a People Magazine, we have a lot of choices: too many, in fact. Who has the time to read them all?

However, it is, after all, August. Maybe this month you can allow yourself a few extra guilty pleasures. skgr

favorite?! you want me to pick one? i just don't think that would be right. i mean, i love gourmet, bon appetite, saveur, chow, food and wine, and everyday food EQUALLY. i will admit to a certain preference for the one that appears in my mailbox, but otherwise...they are all equal in my heart. i won't tarnish my love for them by voting in your tawdry poll.

Has anyone heard of the magazine Donna Hay? I believe it's out of Australia. An expensive magazine not found everywhere, but looks to have great pictures and good ideas.

oh but the best magazine of all is gastronomica!

I know it might be in a significant minority, but Vegetarian Times would be an excellent addition to the poll.

i second andy, gastronomica is like the new yorker (or harpers?) of food magazines... it should be a choice for voting.

Love them all -- but lately have been really enjoying Saveur.

Since I almost never cook, the only one that even managed to insinuate itself into my home for even a 6-month trial period was Everyday Food. It's my favorite by default, and it isn't ITS fault that I've barely cracked open more than one issue of it, much less shopped-and-cooked from it absolutely never. At least, in THEORY it seems more realistic that I might.

I love Saveur's photography. The shallow focus makes the food jump out of whatever spectacular, textured environment it is in. I also love the Kitchen section in the back with a different kitchen every issue. I have so many ideas about my ideal, functional, warm kitchen (walk-in fridge, stove laid into an old hearth, a Salamander, etc).

Personal favorite is Australian Vogue Entertaining and Travel. This mag is where Saveur and Martha Stewart get all their ideas from.

Donna Hay is only published like 3 or 4 times a year. I found one at Gourmet Garage.
