The Kitchen: Julie/Julia Project Goes Mainstream

2005_10_11 julie julia.jpgSeems no matter how modern and techy we writers try to be with our blogs, we still just want to write books. The first food blog, any type of blog actually, that I ever read was the Julie/Julia project - a 365-day attempt to cook each and every recipe from Julia Child's tour de force, Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

Lucky her, Powell has just come out with a book (the real paper kind!) about the experience, called Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen. Our copy, from the aptly named Powell's books (our favorite online bookseller), just arrived, all hard-cover and shiny.

The reviews are mixed, but we can't imagine it would be very different from the blog itself. And since that hasn't been updated since the day after Julia Child died, in August 2004, I think most of Powell's fans are ready for some new material. The question is: is a blogger, an author? Can the spirit and voice of a blog translate gracefully into a book, to either read and re-read again and again, or to collect dust on a high shelf.

We'll let you know what we think.

Have the editors cleaned up her "French" -- if you know what I mean?!?!?

I never read the blog, but Mastering the Art of French Cooking is my very favorite cookbook. Not only did my Mom use it, but I have never had a failure using those recipes.

I love the way Julia will say.."and now it should look like this" and my god it does!

A college room-mate of mine somehow had Julia Child as a family friend, and she gave him a set of index cards with handwritten recipes. Her hamburger was a favorite of ours, but I never copied any of the recipes down for myself.

I didn't read the blog but I did read the first half of an advance copy of this book and had to put it down because it was just so self indulgent. I began to stop caring about all the digressions she "whips up". I left it wanting to read the biography of Julia Child.

The blog was kinda cute, the book is junk. I'll bet she never gets this good a publishing deal again.

I loved the book; I like hearing how people think and live in the here and now. Julia child's Bio on the other hand was too tedious for me and I love biographies.
