From David:

I was working at my desk by the window on Sunday when I noticed a puff of smoke rising next to my window. Looking down to see if there was a fire, I saw my downstairs neighbor having a cigarette break.

guess where that butt's going when she's done. I meant the one she's puffing on.

I like the water balloon idea.

Great picture... but gotta say, smoking is gross. This lady hanging out her window just to get a puff, so perfectly exemplifies that.

I got the obligatory fear-of-heights shiver down my back as soon as I saw this picture.

What can I say?

Nothing like a bunch of self-righteous anti-smoking Nazis.

Puff on downstairs lady!!!

Maybe I'll lean out the window with a McDonald's milkshake and spit the straw out when I'm done.

Hey now, hdtex. It's neither self-righteous nor Nazi-like to desire considerate neighbors!

Listen, I understand that the great outdoors is about the only place left these days where folks like you can work on your lung tumors in peace, but all the rest of us ask is that you keep in mind where those noxious fumes are going...

In summertime, my immediate upstairs neighbor often hangs out his window for a smoke, just like the lady in the picture. And yes, I know when he's doing it, just from the stink that wafts in my window. Plus (and here's the really obnoxious part) I often find ashes in my ledge planters in the mornings when I'm weeding or watering my plants. Now c'mon, even you can't claim that it's considerate to use your downstairs neighbor's garden as your personal ashtray, can you?!?

One time, when I smelled him up there, I stuck my head out the window, looked up, exchanged pleasantries about the lovely evening we were enjoying, and then politely asked him if he'd refrain from flicking his ashes in my Sunpatiens. With equal politeness, he assure me he would. And for a time he kept his word. And then he went right back to his nasty ways.

Surely you can understand my frustration...

i'm an ex smoker, horrible addiction. i absolutely HAD to smoke, it's a miracle i was able to stop.
try asking nicely and let them know how it is affecting you and it might reduce but unless they find somewhere else....

i tried real hard not to inflict my disgusting habit on others but it was sooo hard. i glad i remember how hard-over 5yrs now
good luck

For the record, I believe she stubbed out her smoke and respectfully brought the butt inside.

DanielPS3,
Not that it makes it right, but I think ashes are actually good for the soil, at least in some instances.

The main thing that irks me is that, for some reason, cigarette butts aren't considered litter. It is, for the most part, considered acceptable to toss a butt toward the curb or out the car window.

The second shot on flickr looks like she's going to flick that butt.
