The Modern Estate magazine is hardly a beacon of small living. But the current issue, if you can get your hands on it, has an inspiring surface treatment featured in it.
It's a wall in the Connecticut showroom of Peacock and Beale that's covered in white buttons and then grouted. The buttons are treated just like mosaic tile. The result is an encrusted, bejeweled look, shining in varied shades of white...

We couldn't find an image of the wall, but it's shown beautifully in the current The Modern Estate issue. The photo above hopefully conveys the scale and texture of the wall. Now, just imagine it all in chalky whites. We love this idea, because we're sure this could be cheaper than going with mosaic tiles. We've spotted buttons for sale by the pound in some second-hand shops and are dying to buy a bunch a try this out.
Hmm...I've been eating my heart out over some ridiculously expensive mother-of-pearl tile...but the world is full of MOP buttons....
Hmm!
