This image really exemplifies the importance of grout color when you're working with really tiny tiles. (The image at the top is the same tile photographed before the grout was applied.) Designed by Claudio Silvestrin for Brix, these Frammenti (fragment) tiles really show off texture. Via: materialicio.us.
Can you imagine trying to keep that clean!?

Or imagine having to redo the grout 10yrs later! Mosaics are lovely, but no way do I want to do the cleaning & maintenance!

I love them so much better without the grout. Is there any way to keep tiles on without grout?

Brix's Web site shows them with matching grout, which makes them look like the "Sanitis" wall paper popular for kitchens and baths in the 1950s. Just WAY more expensive. MEH

Absolutely beautiful... I want to stroke them gently in someone else's home.
The only way I'd ever grout those is with a grout the exact color of the local hard water deposits, but that's my theory on tile-setting anyway.
(Cassis, there is, alas, no way to use tiles as tiles without grout. You'd have to find some other use, like using a section as a trivet.)

The texture looks like Tweed....but for tile. Pretty

Grout doesn't have to be a pain. Use Spectralock grout (or some other Epoxy grout). They never need to be sealed, and are guaranteed to be stain proof. You still do have to clean it occasionally, but even if you neglect it for long ammounts of time it will come clean with minimal trouble. You can get the Spectralock @ Lowes. It is made by a company called Laticrete. There is one made by a company called Mapei also, but I can't think of what it is called off the top of my head. Just make sure it is an epoxy grout.
It is a tad harder to work with, and is quite a bit more expensive, but SO worth it on the ease of maintanence alone.
