Tips: 19

This is a new idea: a persistent post for your tips only.

We get a lot of emailed tips, and we blog as many as we can, but some get left on the cutting room floor. So, in addition to sending us emails, we're going to experiment with taking tips right here (you can still email us).

We'll be pulling the best tips to posts on the front page, but this will insure that the all tips are shared immediately.

I have a townhouse with a semi-finished basement. There's a drop-ceiling with recessed lighting and the gray stone foundation is exposed on three walls with sage green drywall on the other wall. I think I want to keep the stone foundation exposed because it looks pretty cool. But, what should I do with the floor? Right now, it's an ugly painted concrete with the area rug the previous owners left (which is also ugly). Any ideas of what to do with it? I don't want to spend too much (of course!) but I'd like it to be cool for an office/hangout room.

The LivingEtc site has a pair of online calculators for paint and wallpaper. The paint one is especially nifty, as it allows you to put in the number of coats and allow for how many windows and doors you are doing.

Before wallpapering, put up a fresh coat of paint. If you ever have to remove the wallpaper it will be easier to do and you won't damage the wall.

Upstate - not "alarmingly similar" but THE SAME as WE. After all, the site is called Overstock. Apparently, WE sold the overstock to Overstock.
