Dignitet Hardware from Ikea

2004_9_15_dignitet.jpgDrop the curtain! We are big fans of using curtains - or soft walls (as we call them) - to separate rooms in open plan apartments as well as to replace doors in front of closets or to rooms.

So, after posting How To: Hang Curtains Across Any Room, we were super pleased to recieve this recommendation from Mike for Ikea's Dignitet Hardware (with pics!). (Thanks, Mike!) MGR

I just hung some curtains from the ceiling to divide the space in my loft. I used the new DIGNITET hardware from Ikea and had pretty good luck with it, and I like its clean look. It comes with 197 inches of steel wire, which you cut down if you don't need that much (best to have some fairly burly wire cutters on hand).

See Pics: 1 2 3 4 5 6

Similar to the turnbuckles mentioned above, you turn a threaded rod with a small allen wrench (included) to create the right amount of tension on the cable. The only problem I ran into, is that I used drywall anchors and screws to secure it to the ceiling. But the anchors aren't really adequate for this application so I can't get quite enough tension in the cable (or the anchors will just pull out of the ceiling). So I might have to redo it with stronger anchors. But the hardware itself seems very strong.

my wife and i just picked up some of these this weekend for our loft. they're awesome! we put curtains up over our ~8ft windows, and sank them into the brick, they hold very well.

getting the curtains on was a bit of a pain, but i quickly realized that draping the curtains over the ladder to take the weight off was a huge help. we bought a few extra sets to use as dividers elsewhere too.

do people in "lofts" shop at "ikea" ?

no mounting hardware is included. you will need to go by your local hardware store and purchase some screws/anchors.

"yes" they "do", tim.

Does anyone know any tricks to getting these cable wire systems to work over an area greater than 16 feet? I have an 18'-8" expanse of windows I want to use a cable wire system with... Any suggetions??

they sell other "anchors", like those picture above with the arms, but the anchors only have a hole in it to allow you to thread the wire through for extra support.

Does the $9.99 cost include all hardware, or does it just include the wire. If all is not included in the above price, how much is each individual piece. I would like to purchase this item, maybe more than 1, just wanted to know how much I would be spending.

Thanks

Do they sell anything similar that can go around a corner. I want to create a closet with curtains. One side is wall so thats good, but at the other end, there is no wall so I want to go around the corner and return to the back wall. Any ideas?

Is there something like a spool I could mount on the ceiling for it to wrap around the corner?

Thanks, Jennifer

I bought this and finally got it up. One end was drilled into a stud but the other end had to go into drywall and it kept getting yanked out of the wall. After scouring Lowes and buying just about every kind of toggle bolt, wall anchor they had, we finally got them up. You can buy an extra piece for a few bucks that allows it to be used around a corner. Good luck.

I want to buy a boat load of the little curtain clips that come with the IKEA cabel wire system. I would have bought the entire set just for the hooks at IKEA, but there's no store in ATL yet. The same set that sells at IKEA for $3.99 is at least $20 on EBay. Does anyone know where online I can go to get the little hooks and NOT get ripped off?
Thanks!

i've seen rings with clips (aka little hooks) at pottery barn, cost plus world market and target.

you know - ikea does have a website.

I just saw this post. I have not tried this system personally, but I do have the halogen lights that work on the same cable system. to go around corners, I had to come up with a system as the lighting store I found them at wanted $50 for the corner bracket (kinda limited here in oklahoma)

Anyway my homemade solution for corners
1 eye bolt
1 large washer
1 nut
1 toggle bolt

place the nut on to the eye bolt, then the washer, then take the toggle off the bolt and put it on the eye bolt. Next place the toggle in the ceiling and tighten the nut until the eye bolt is secure against the ceiling. Worked well for me. Lights looked great above my bar, and unless you really start looking no one would notice you didnt pay for the expensive corner bolt.
Hope this helps
p.s. could probably be used to aid in support for long expanses

Does anyone know anyplace else that sells the thingies that go into the wall? I bought several of the Deka's (similar to the Dignitet, but even cheaper at $4) I have plenty of clips and wire, but don't have anymore of the wall mount. part. They aren't available online at IKEA and going to the store is too time consuming if you don't have a car. If anyone has any I would be willing to buy them from you. I only need a few more.

Just gotta say that this site is excellant. I've been scouring eBay for monthes now for the IKEA tension wire curtain hanger and found it incredibly expensive. Blogged you guys up and found out I can probably hunt through Home Depot and rig my own up. I'm on my way there as soon as I get my car back!! Thank you for the conficence to buy some wire and stuff on my own. Wish me luck. At the worst, it'll work just as well for WAY LESS MONEY. Don't have an IKEA store here. Was blogging to find an on-line one and didn't.

I am putting up the same system soon. What kind of appliances do i need to buy to fasten the hardware to the ceiling? Also do I need to use a drill?

Do you have to use clips or can you pull the wire through the top of the curtain ... such as on a valance . . . where a curtain rod would normally be pulled through?

I need to know if anyone knows the weight allowed with the Ikea, Dignitet cable system??

Jessica: you need a drill, and I personally always hire someone with experience for these things to drill holes in my brick walls. If you don't need a drill (drywall, etc.) the wall won't hold the tension... find a stud behind the drywall and use the drill.

CHR: the diginet system doesn't easily allow you to take the wire out -- the idea is that the wire is permanently strung, and you clip the curtain to it. Diginet works by clamping the ends of the aircraft cable wire in a combined clamp/togglebolt anchored to the wall anchor (one clamp/togglebolt and two wall achnors are visible above). Both the clamping of the wire and the tightening of the toggle happen invisibly, by inserting the wire into the clamp/togglebolt and then tightening and clamping it using that little Allen wrench through tiny holes, which is not easy to do mostly because you are working on top of a ladder next to the ceiling.

My diginet experience, starring my cat, is this: I strung diginet from one brick wall to another to curtain a 22-foot windowed wall. I clipped floor-length curtains to the wire, which in once place pooled in front of the radiator, nicely hiding it, and appealing to Coco, who liked to sleep on the curtain hems next to the radiator. The wire started to sag a bit due to her weight on it, but not too much, so I figured no harm done.

Then one day she curled up, the wire came out of one wall, and the curtains collapsed all over the floor. All the hardware was still intact, but the end of the cablewire that had come loose was completely frayed. What seems to have happened is that every time the cat sat on the curtain, each tug pulled the cable wire out of the clamp a bit more, until the entire end of the wire had unravelled into its component wires and no longer formed a bulk thick enough for the clamp to bite into.

So now I'm switching to the eyebolt-and turnbuckle-from-the-local-hardware-store model, sand I'm going to tie the cable wire in a Hercules knot around the turnbuckle eye. It will have none of the sleek elegance of the diginet system, but it will be easier to install at the top of a ladder, and there will be clamp to fray the wire. I don't know if I'll use the same curtains. I'm not sure I want to let Coco try to bring these down as well.

can anyone give me insight as to how this hardware is attached to the wall/ceiling? I recently moved into a loft that had the DIGNITET already installed and the mounts are in the way of some blinds I'd like to hang. the mounting is nicely hidden from view so I am not sure how to proceed uninstalling them. I have the little allen wrench and some key-like thingies, but I can only see how the hex wrench is useful. thanks much in advance!

Does anyone know how to fix one of these systems after the wire has come loose? My cat Coco also liked to play in the curtain and has pulled the wire out. Do I have to replace the whole system??
