I hate clutter and dirtiness (the natural enemies of good design), and strive with Spring Cleaning not just to clean out, but also to reestablish any of our home made systems that have fallen on hard times over the winter.
So for this email, I wanted to pull together a few tips and systems that we've used in our house for a long time, and which generally incite either praise or horror among our readers.
Here are my top picks for the year:

huh? wasn't this exact post up over a week ago?

Bon Ami is great. We've used it in our bathroom and kitchen for 30 years, and everything still looks fine. The fixtures; not us :P

Wait. Washing windows with newspapers? Doesn't the ink rub off on the windows (and all over your hands)?

Yes, it rubs off on your hands, but not the windows. Don't know why, but newspaper = streak free windows.

something about the ink in the newspapers. I just washed my windows last weekend - very dirty storm windows I used my miracle cloth with dawn dish washing liquid and lots of hot water - then did the newspaper thing.
Turns out a dry miracle cloth worked just as well if not better than the newspaper. Didn't discover this until the front windows were done. the miracle cloth left no lint and did a better job overall.
when I say miracle cloth I'm just referring to the generic microfiber cloths sold everywhere.

We live in a 7th floor apartment with windows that open from the top and bottom. How do we clean inside and out?

Will adding the step to decant cleaners into persnickety bottles make doing the housework more efficient?
I really hope this is just a fad. If your cleaning tip is to add more work to chores, I mean, when's it going to be Time Management month? Adding steps to hated tasks because of some imaginary label-less serenity disorder you invented, and organizing by buying boxes to pretend you are neat... where is the therapy here?

Thank you for this post. My friends think I am nuts when I say I'm going to spend a Saturday afternoon cleaning windows. I don't have great views to begin with so I want to at least have clean glass to look at.

Why is it exactly that you can't just remove the labels from the things you buy? And, yes, I'd love to wash my windows on the outside, but I can't reach them.

instead of newspaper, use packing paper (the stuff your wrap your glassware in at ikea, or before moving) to clean glass - amazingly great streak free shine and no ink mess.

Try using a squeegee with a little soap and water like the professionals. It's so much easier and no streaks.
