Top 10: Clocks

10-30-clock.jpg

Daylight Saving Time is over and clocks fell back this weekend. I though now would be a good time to take a look at clocks - great in the kitchen, office, anywhere around the house:

• Engineer Hans Hilfiker's Swiss Railway Station Clock is a standard throughout European train stations.
• Arne Jacobsen's City Clock
• Takumi of Japan's handmade wood clock available at Compact Impact
• George Nelson's Ball Clock
• M&Co Wall Clock by Tibor Kalman: Five O'Clock
• The very affordable KÄNDIS wall clock from Ikea

We have a very boring run of the mill radio alarm clock that I've been looking to replace with something cooler. However, I can't seem to find a design-y replacement. I definitely want big digital numbers (no mistaking what time it is in sleep fog) and I've grown used to waking up to NPR rather than an alarm, so I have to have the radio. If only that handmade wood one had an alarm, I'd be all over it (although anything over $200 would give me pause).

I'm looking for a replacement for my ugly cube clock radio alarm too. It seems there are NO nice alarm clock/radios. How can this be?

They are a bit overpriced, but check out the Phillipe Starck designed clock radios from Oregon Scientific. Very stylish and functional.

One feature it has that I thought was nothing more than a gadget at first is that it will project the time on your ceiling. Actually, while in a sleepy haze it's quite nice to check the time by simply looking at the ceiling rather than have to reach over to turn on the backlight on the clock.

Has some interesting alarm clocks. They used to sell this great alarm clock, but I no longer see it on their website, maybe they have it in the store still. They have the same clock at the Park Hyatt in Seoul. It's battery operated, very slim and modern, but alas, I can't find it on the website anymore. And if you ever go to Seoul you should stay at that hotel (Interiors designed by Japanse firm, Super Potato) for at least one night, it's a bit pricey.

How about the Tivoli clock/radio? It has an alarm, it looks great, and it's under $200. Amazon has them!
