Andrey Melnichenko's Yacht "A" by Phillipe Starck

While we will (probably?) never be wealthy enough to commission a custom yacht by a world class designer, seeing the mega yacht that Phillipe Starck designed for Russion billionaire Andrey Melnichenko has inspired to think about what would be important in the design execution. Melnichenko's yacht has many unique design features making it ideal for one of the richest men in the world...

Fun facts about "A"

• 390' long and made of steel
• The bow is super-sharp to cut through Arctic ice
• Rolls-Royce steering system
• Clamshell doors at the rear open upwards to release two 30' speedboats
• 6 guest cabins
• 37 crew members!!!
• Cost £200,000,000

If you were wealthy enough to commission a custom yacht, who would you hire to design it? Tom Dixon? Marcel Wanders? Paul Smith? Yves Behar? Maya Lin? Jaime Hayon? Tell us in the comments.

You can read more about "A" from The London Times: Superyacht: Andrey Melnichenko's battleship heads to sea.

I'm sure it's no coincidence that it looks like a Russian Submarine?

As for myself - I don't need a private yacht: I have Cunard.

that's something... you mean a person who has unworldy purchasing powers can purchase virtually anyone to build virtually anything? huh, never knew that.

the boat is nice, but frankly, I am not terribly interested in things that the entire state of delaware couldn't afford if all their citizens merged their purchasing powers..... That boat isn't a reality in any AT reader's world.....

It looks like an old James Bond set - something that the accented evildoer would float around in while plotting to destroy the world. Given the money and pedigree, I would have expected much better.

What I would not like are the crew members beneath me. I I were that rich I would do a lot of unholy things on that boat. And I would think they chat about me. This would make me feel uncomfortable :-]

By the way. BEPSF ist right, it looks like the akula class sub of the russians. Why did he not make it submergable. Total privacy guaranteed :-]

And I do not believer in ice-cutting qualities. when ice gets thick the hull would breach. Its more for cutting waves for stability on high speeds.

Anyway I really like the boat!!!

Where exactly is this 'Russio' from where this 'Russion' presumably comes?

It's not very "pretty" which is what you would usually expect for a yacht to be, but I bet the inside is really beautiful and made from the best materials available. It's like a floating piece of luxury real estate!
