In extremely expensive cities like New York, small hotel rooms that still put you right in the thick of it can be a hot commodity. It keeps your accommodation costs relatively low while retaining some luxuries (albeit in an 8'x10' space)...

The Pod is one such accommodation. The hotel, on E. 51st Street, is situated in the middle of the city and offers rooms as small as sleeper cabins with bunks. Single through queen rooms are also available, though all are compact with storage at a premium.
The Jane is located in a building that was originally meant for accommodating sailors in rooms sized like ship cabins. Now, the Jane Street building in the West Village is perfect for travelers seeking a perfect location and willing to sacrifice on space (much like those of us who actually live here!).

They lost me at the communal bathrooms.

I agree with jooly. These spaces look adorable and affordable, but I guess I am too high-maintenance for communal bathrooms.

I stayed at the Pod in Feb. 2008 and loved it. I even had a room with the communal baths - which were very clean, much to my relief. But if you want a private bath, they do have some rooms with private baths for a little extra.
It's a great hotel. Friendly staff and concierge, great location with good subway lines less than five minutes away but lots of things can be walked to. I plan on staying at the Pod next time I'm in NY and recommend it to people who just want a clean, safe place to sleep (not for families, simply because of size).

I haven't stayed at the Jane myself, but I put my cousin up there. The staff at The Jane was incredibly nice and accomodating about all the arrangements I needed to make, and they were able to do everything on short notice. They even helped to keep an eye on him, since he's not exactly street-smart. Anyway, great service.

I've stayed at The Pod as well, and I too avoided the communal bathrooms. Too much like student days for me.
One tip I would give anyone thinking of staying there: the higher density accommodation and younger age of the clientele can mean it's not the quietest place in town. If you're a light sleeper, take ear plugs!
