Michel Bayard: Pinhole Photographer

11-2-bayard.jpg

Remember the Pinhole Camera? Remember it's simplicity? You put a piece of photo paper in a little box with a hole in it and then take it outside and make a picture.

Picture-031.jpgThere is a fellow named Michel Bayard, who hasn't forgotten. Not only does he take pinhole photographs, but he has developed a rapport with the medium that gives his small prints a lovely, elegant and timeless look. Here are his words:

My work with Pinhole Photography involves using small containers (film cannisters, Whitman candy and Altoids boxes, dog food cans, and others)...I handprint every photo in my darkroom...I do pinhole photography because of its magical simplicity.

Michel's photographs are small (really small!) and sweet - perfect art for a small apartment - and in the classic mold of mythical New York streetscapes and views. The joyousness of the small and the handmade.

Michel is at the Farmer's Market F,Sat,Sun & M. You can see his other photos at his page at photolog.net, where he is listed as using "no camera."

Seriously people, if you don't know the word, look it up.

="raport" becomes "rapport" all because of the one thing I didn't have in my 6th grade spelling bee, "help."

i bought one of his pieces years ago... and as small as it is near all my bigger pieces, it gets a LOT of comments.

i love how the manhattan bridge twists up and around itself.

Hey, cut our gracious host some spelling slack, wouldja?! Or were you just using it to relive your former spelling glory? Impressive!

And it's not the size of the piece that matters.
(It's the width of the mat.) ;)

As a non-NYer, which Farmer's Market can I find him at?

Thanks!

I bought three of his Brooklyn Bridge photos and love them. Perfect for the twisted New Yorker. They go incredibly well with a painting of the Verazano bridge I bought by Tracy Silva Barbosa. www.tsilvabarbosa.com.

I love shopping for original artwork in Union Square. I have gotten several of his pinhole pictures for gifts and one for myself. He does amazing work.
