2004_9_23_unicalogo.gifWhat if you opened an online modern homestore in Las Vegas and offered every cool design manufacturer under the sun, along with products for children and pets as well as soap, watches and artwork? Well, you'd have Unica Home...

Unica Home is a playground for mid-century and right-now modern design. From a Boroullec lounge chair to the Eames Compact Sofa, Unica has a huge selection. This is as close to cutting edge European design as American online retailers get.

Prices are full retail. Case Study bed (one of the cheapest) is $1,595, while Philip Starck beds will run you $10,000 when you are ready to check out. Sofas are all mainly in the $5,000 range. The Apocalypse Desk is a stunning design at $2,160. Can we say high end? The nice thing is that Unica does have a spread, and things you haven't seen elsewhere. With kitchenware, accessories and smaller gift items, you may just want to look around for awhile and go home with a Tonsil Toothbrush Holder by Inflate UK for $29 or a Utensilo organizer for $195. Bad news? Their customer service is not rated too well by our readers.

it's worth paying more money than dealing with Unica Home's customer service. I've never been treated so rudely.

The wall clock pictured is an astoundingly bad design-- intentionally difficult to read, desperately eccentric.

i must second the comment about customer service, not that they were rude, but in general a royal pain to deal with. we had our wedding registry there and it has been a bit of nightmare. too bad because they have such a great collection of items

I've bought half the stuff in my apartment from them - haven't had any issues. Plus, no tax (I'm in NY) or shipping on orders over $100!

I had a horrible experience with them as well.

My mom tried to order something from them as a surprise for my wife. Much to her dismay the website for ordering was not working correctly and she ended up having to give up, it would never finish her order. So she told me to order it instead and see if I could finish it (she is not that tech savy). So I ordered it a few days after she tried. Worked fine, all is well.

So the product arrived in the mail. Surprise! It was all good.

Then about a week and half later, another box arrived from them, with the same product in it. Couldn't figure it out at first. I knew the one i ended up ordering came first because i added a little card to it.

SO then we find out the one that arrived later was the one she had tried to order, but it never went through. Plus, there was no e-mail confirmation (which I got one with my order), so we had no idea it was coming. So not only should it not have been ordered in the first place, since it never went through on our side and they never informed us that it actually did go through, but it also got there over a week AFTER the one i ordered, which i ordered it a few days later... how does that happen.

Then the whole ordeal of trying to get them to return it, and we ended up returning it at a discounted price, just to get it taken care of. Should have gotten a full refund, and still bitter about it, since it wasn't our mistake. It also took over a month for them to credit her account as well.

Never again.

^^^ditto the poor customer service experience.

I browse the site occaisonally but order from competitors. I've had good luck from fitzu.com and retromodern.com.

I have never ordered anything successfully from them. Calls to customer service are cut off or never returned. Such horrible service. Don't waste your time, their stuff is cool but the hassle isn't worth the effort and aggravation.

I have tried them. But I ve had better ordering experiences with didriks.com (took my return no questions asked) and some others.

Still waiting for a price for an item. It has been 2 weeks and no one has called. I doubt I will be completing my order with them.

glad i am not the only one. I forgot to mention that they were continually pushing in give us store credit on the item they weren't even supposed to send in the first place. Why the heck would we want store credit to a horrible retailer, there was no chance we would buy anything else from them. Should have just ordered it from SF Moma, paid the small difference in the beginning, instead of getting screwed in the end.

Instead of posting about them like it is a good thing with their web-address at the top and the pictures of their teases, and then at the bottom saying how they don't have a good rep. How about a big "DON'T BUY FROM THEM" at the top of the post, and ward off anyone else before they get screwed.

^^^I, too, question why AT is reposting this after all of the negative feedback.

I'm also echoing the horrible customer service.

We registered for our china there. I had heard that it might be discontinued (Table Stories, RIP, by Tord Boontje), so I asked them to let me know if and when that was happening. They said that of course they would let me know. Not only did they not let me know when it was discontinued (like a month later), I discovered on my own that they even had it massively discounted because it was being discontinued. By that time, most of the pieces were gone due to the sale. They then refused to return ANY of my phone calls or emails.

The people who ordered gifts for us there (before we pulled our registry) were treated rudely enough that every single one commented to me about it.

Thank God for Vessel - the people there are total saints and helped us get all of our china. In several cases, we got the last pieces that were available anywhere. Table Stories was a complicated pattern because it had so many variations; the staff at Vessel repeatedly went far above and beyond to help us get the different variations. Of course if Unica Home had just let us know what was happening, that wouldn't have been necessary.

I agree with jmorey: DON'T BUY FROM THEM definitely belongs at the top of this post.
