We have an intricate wrought iron grille at one of our apartment's windows. We love the shadows it projects onto the shades and into the room. But we wouldn't want grilles covering every window unless it were a necessity. Delia Shades is one answer that gives you beautiful "grilles" but allows them to be rolled up with your window shades when you want a clear, open view.
For the right room, this would be very pretty. I have a wrought iron screen I brought back from Mexico and it casts wonderful shadows.

These are pretty. What a great option for a room with little or no architectural interest. PS, I like them so much, I emailed for more info and they are about $250 - $300 for a relatively standard size window (35Wx56H). Not bad.

They are solar shades that come in different levels of UV filtration - mine are 97% because I'm a textile collector and my loft gets sun.
Delia is very nice to deal with and, for custom made shades, the price is reasonable - plus, being vinyl, you can clean them, which I couldn't do with my prior translucent shades.

Maybe this might help me to camouflage the actual bars on my window? The co-op board refused my request to have the bars removed when we first bought the place. I'm planning to ask again (mostly new board members), but if they refuse, maybe Delia could give me an option that lets light in but makes the silhouette of the real, ugly bars less obvious!

The Shade Store (www.theshadestore.com) has great custom shades at good prices as well. A "standard" size like 35"x60" is only around $120. I haven't heard of Delia shades before, but I will have to check them out. These are really cool.

SYB_in_DC, if someone breaks into your apartment, they will have free reign of the entire building. The board wisely does not want to put the other shareholders at risk.
If there are bars on your windows, they are there for a reason. You would be wise to keep them.

SYB_in_DC, I had the same situation in my co-op apt in NYC. I had the the management take them down. I don't know about DC but in NY if you do not have Fire Dept approved window guards (meaning you can open them from within) it is against the law and you can be fined each day you have them up. They immediately cut them out of the brick work.
