Nick Dine, son of the painter, and Richard Shemtov were young designers who started this huge, airy modern store and company in 1996 and had firmly established themselves in the design world by 2000. While Mr. Dine also does interiors and residences for a living, one imagines that Dune is their showcase, and the place they show off and test their best ideas.

The style here is totally modern contemporary, playful and colorful. Everything is made to order, and fabric choices are endless. One reader reports that "customer service is horrible," but a number of clients have had good luck.

NYMag says: ...stylish furniture and accessories from cutting-edge designers...

Couches start at $2700 (with fabric), armchairs at $1800 (with fabric). We recommend the Climate Couch and the Electrode Shelving (pictured here) which runs $225 per unit and comes in 1,000 colors(powder coated steel).
